Mazda this week became the first Japanese maker to sell a diesel car, launching the diesel-powered Mazda6 hatch and wagon priced from $38,090 and $35,205 respectively.
The pair are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre that produces 105kW of power and 360Nm of torque and pushes the hatch from 0 to 100kmh in 9.5 seconds. Both cars are available only as six-speed manuals, which Mazda concedes may deter some buyers.
Mazda claims average fuel consumption is 5.9 litres/100km, which drops to 5.0L/100km on highway driving.
Safety equipment includes six airbags, anti-lock brakes, anti-whiplash head restraints and collapsible pedals.
Standard equipment on the diesel models is similar to the Mazda6 Luxury petrol versions. Climate-control air-conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel (with audio and cruise controls) and a six-CD stereo are included on the wagon. The hatch has leather seats, Bose stereo and power driver's seat with memory and a "his and hers" setting.
Mazda has a modest sales target of 50 a month nationally.
