View Full Version : The hate on chrome rims

I don't really have one kind of preference as to what kind of rims I like. (Silver, black gunmetal, chrome, etc.) I'm just curios as to why almost everyone on here despises chrome rims? These enkei rims (I know they aren't technically chrome) are probably the ones I'm going to get after the winter driving season.

Because they look retarded on a celica...at least, I think they do. :shrugs:

I agree, chrome on a celly just looks out of place...unless the whole car is chrome
i think gunmetal would be a better suited choice, but its your car.....
what color is your car anyways?

^ Some all chrome looking cars are pretty interesting, like the Euro's (BMW, Mercedes etc.) that did the calander shoot a couple years back.
I think chrome wheels is more reserved for luxury vehicles and domestics. Tuner cars kind of look off place, and I'm not sure if chrome wheels weight more because I don't know if it's just a coating or the whole wheel is made from chrome, but if it's all chrome then it definitely becomes counterproductive to put on a tuner car, especially one like the Celica that thrives off being lighter weight and agile.
I'm not much of a chrome person myself, but I think I've seen some cars that it looks good on.

IMHO, the hate is justified.

gunmetal would look really good especially if you have a carbon hood or plans to add one later on. Black would be good also. You could go with hypersilver with a chrome lip if you really wanted to. I just think all chrome would draw away from the car and focus all the attention to the rims.
Honestly it all really depends on the whole theme your going for with your car.

If you want chrome, get a luxury european car or get something like an Escalade and "bling" it out. Otherwise, like everyone said, it's just :puke:
I have a black celi with black rims w/ a polished lip. Looks decent. I'd suggest going with gunmetal or black, but hey, it's your car. Do with it what you will.

take this rim and get it powdercoated in the middle and the inner lip, and leave the rest of the lip chrome. That would look really good I think. You could even stretch and go with gold/bronze powdercoating and it would still look great.

Man there is nothing wrong with chrome rims on a celi if you style it right. Ugly chrome rims are no better than ugly gun meta rim. I have chome rims on my ride and thats one of the first things that gets noticed (in a positive light). Don't get me wrong, not hating on anyone who wants gun metal rims etc., but to each his own. :bang:

Everyone has their opinion. Some don't like gunmetal or black wheels. I had chrome wheels on my celi, nothing but good attention on my car. But to each their own. If you like how it looks on your car there you go.

Chrome is just "played out" and therefore "hated on". It's still rare here in europe. I think it looks good if you have minor other shiny accents (chrome exhaust tip, etc). The ones you have picked would look good in most cases, at least they're racer-style with a lip. Some of those funky flush-style bling chrome rims would look horrid on a celi.

those enkei's aren't chrome .. its like some special coating. Its just shiny but doesn't add the weight like chrome does. doesn't look that good in my opinion. I had a pic of them on an MRS but i can't find it right now

Ya it's their SBC coat that's made to look like chrome, that's why I said those technichally aren't chrome rims.

IMO there is a difference, there are tuner chrome wheels, that look decent. too me its hard to pull off chrome in a tasteful way. i've seen a few accords, 240's, supra's, and evo's pull off the chromies at local car shows. but its always safe to leave the chrome w/ the trucks/suv's/luxury rides. its really up to you tho, your ride!

IMO chrome rims are more for show or a "hey look at me." Gun metal, hyper silver, and black are less show and more of a performance "have fun looking at the back of my car."

me too. nothing wrong with a chrome finish if the design of the rim is nice and racey, rather than the horrible style that most chrome rims come in.

There is a difference.
There are polished/machined faced rims and there are chrome rims.
I have no discrimination against polished/machined faced rims, such as the TRD RH rims that SLVR STEALTH is selling.
I believe chrome should not be on any sport compact car because of the fact that it just doest flow. I admit it, there are some nice simple designed (5-stars) chromies that look good, but then again, you're adding more weight to an already underpowered car, such as the Celica. God forbid that you don't complain about how sluggish and slow your Celica is when you've got chromies on. Its more of a preferance and that is what I believe in. Another thing about chrome rims on a Celica is that people MORE OFTEN THAT NOT get a set with the ugliest design. :puke:

Aren't his just polished TRD RH rims? Some people don't understand that there is a difference between polished/machined surfaced and chrome dipping. :faint: If that's the case, then this thread should be renamed to "The hate on mirror-finish rims." :faint:

Really. Those TRD rims are REAL nice... If you know what you're talking about, you know that's not chrome. You can distinguish chrome from polished.

i like chrome/mirrored on larger sedans/lux/suv's and for some reason for me they have to be larger (not to the point were the car has to be lifted) but not 15-17's maybe 18's. they just seem out of place. When the cars are smaller the chrome distracts the eyes away from the car just to the rims. On a larger car there is more to look at so its not as distracting.

exactly, chrome rims are just not designed for our car(for the most part), imo. even tuner styled rims painted chrome dont look rite to me.

I worked at a car wash (unfortunatley) a couple months back and most of the chrome rims I saw looked really bad. If you like chrome than fine but I'm saying that the mirror finish starts to look scratched up after a while and the chrome plated rims with rivits in them rust. For the celica I really like the gunmetal and bronze rims if you're painting the stock wheels. Bronze looks awesome on the red and blue Celicas that I have seen on the site. I wouldn't go with black because it kinda makes the tires look faded. Although the black with polished lip looks really good on almost any car.
