View Full Version : Exhaust lowering problem?

I plan on getting my Celi lowered early next year and I got a quick question. I have a custom exhaust with the piping going through my rear suspension. I've had it like this for over a year with no prob. But after I lower it, will it be a problem?

Do you have a pic? Depending on what type of drop you go for it will be a problem

I'm one of 36 people in the world who don't own a digital camera :gap: So it might be awhile before I can get a pic up. I plan on using some tein s tech if that helps.

ok, stechs are only about 1.5" so you should be able to get away with it. However if you hit a big bump in the back you can expect the smack the exhaust pipe

As far as I know, I have not hit my exhaust pipe so far. But could it be so bad that, my exhaust falls off?

No..shouldn't, you got a all custom one made?

It's cut off at the res. Then pretty much straight pipe through the suspensioon into my melon shooter tip :gap:

i have the same setup...the exhaust going through where the suspensions are. I'm sitting on Koni Yellow adjustable shocks with eibach sportlines (1.8f and 2.4r) and it's fine.

That makes me feel better  You ever hear the pipe getting hit though?

flylice13
12-04-2006, 04:55 PM
not that i know of, but then again, i've got my shock settings on the hardest setting, so it doesn't depress more than 1/4" when i hit a bump.

2.4" rear! yikes thats low.

I'm on factory height and I scrub my Invader front just about everyday. That's why I'm getting teins, not too much of a drop. But enough to get noticed.

I've got a set of rennsport that i'm selling. it's rated at 1.7" drop all around. asking $125 + Shipping. used only for 1000km then i switched to the eibachs.

Thanks for the offer. But I got a awesome local deal on some teins.

I've wanted to to do this as an experiment. (exhaust over the suspension). I wasn't sure it would work with the suspension fully compressed. Now I see it's not an experiment, it's been done. Somebody please take a picture so I can show it to the exhaust guy. I wanted to cut out the muffler and run just a pipe to the stock GT-S tip at the stock location. This is something I wanted to take car of over christmas break.

i was going to do that as well! but was worried that it might hit the suspension thingy, but im glad to hear its safe to do!

i reckon that with proper mandel tubing, this would be a better alternative to the kazuma, although probabkly just as loud :(

I went ahead and did it. I mean I had it done. Yes that is crush bent, but was kept to a minimum. The diameter of the pipe was >> the diameter of the inlet to the tip anyway. It's not really streetable. It is slightly quieter than unbolted, but not much. Lift is more pronounced, but that is probably just sensurround (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensurround). Maybye I'll get a short clip before I put the spare stock exhaust on.

Looks pretty good, those crush bends are pretty limited. I hope to run mine the same route you did, can you hear it knock on bumps or anything?

...can you hear it knock on bumps or anything?
Nothing yet. It was just done this afternoon, so I don't have much experience with it. Those are snow tires. I can't do much of a shakedown with those. The intent is to use it at autocross. I might not be able to hear it, but I'll check for marks.

I have the same type of setup, teins and exhaust through rear suspension. I get a knock on bigger offcenter bump not from the control arm and piping, but from the fat oval muffler hitting the spare tire well. You'll be fine.

wow, impressive stuff. fair enough, the sound may be similar to unbolted...but is the power the same as unbolted? (that is, if u have driven with unbolted before)

im planning to do the same thing with 2.5" mandrel pipework from manifold back...it'd be nice to know what you think of your current power improvement with it...

I have driven with it unbolted. Briefly. I honestly don't remember it well enough to say if that was better and by how much. This does give me an idea though.
I was going to log some acceleration runs of this set-up compared to the stock exhaust. I can do the unbolted at the same time. That is fairly easy.

No offense but that tip looks like ****. If you want a loud sound I would actually suggest the same setup that I have. I have a custom cat-back exhaust with Blitz nur spec tip.

I had an autocross sunday. I didn't hear any knocks or banging. As if you could hear anything back there anyway.
When I was changing tires in the sleet, I looked and didn't see any dents or marks. At full droop it was real close though.

It may pay to have your fabricator place it a little more inboard than I have it. I had some video taken that day. It needs some editing. But I'll strip off the audio and post a link.

Here it is-audio link- (http://mysite.verizon.net/delta_b/stuff/aem/audio.mpg). As usual, I'm not really happy with it. But I'd rather post it than sit on it. I like the part where the announcer was yelling to shift up. I had wheelspin in second, but wasn't on the limiter....and any gains felt?A couple of weeks ago I put a stock exhaust on. I messed up some in that I didn't log any before and after runs. The weather was just too bad. I was glad to be able to make it up the dirt road and barely make it into the garage (it's on a hill). But the car felt really slow for a while. I'm used to it now.

Here it was on the dyno. You can hear the lift transition at ~18.5 sec. I was surprised at the velocity of the exhaust standing behind it.

my exhaust piping is held right under the control arm to avoid scraping it but it bangs against it constantly, its annoying but its what u gotta do when u drop your rear 3 inches :gap:

btw the picture in my sig is only dropped 2 inches

That's why I had it cut out. For those who wanted to hear the sound, this audio is slightly better, but the guy let up before the limiter. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2440909109698141793&hl=en
