View Full Version : Tein Basic Installation

Hi Friends,

I want to install my TEIN BASIC Coilovers by myself since I want to gain experience from it.
I found this in the install section:
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=132072
I'm pretty sure that the coilover installation part is the same for the BASIC and I want to make sure that I can use that guide to install mine (except for the EDFC thingy).

My questions:
1. How to adjust the front camber plate?
2. Where is it located?
3. And how do I know if I've adjusted correctly to -1 degree?
4. Does the BASIC come with new endlinks like the SS?
5. Before installing the coilovers, do I HAVE to set the ride height to the reccommended height of 1.7" or could I just set it directly to the height that I desire, say... 2"?

More questions will come along as this thread goes by!
Your help will be very much appreciated! :)

Thanks,
David

There are no camber plates on the basics. You have to use the stock top mounts.

Ok, but does it come with the new endlinks just like the SS one?
Thanks, Mica.

Yes it should. Just for the front though. Mostly because the endlink needs to be MUCH shorter for the Teins.

4.) they come with front non-adjustable endlinks.
5.) the only way you will know for sure how much of a drop you have is if you take measurements of the stock set-up from level ground to mid point of wheel arch. i installed mine at the lowest setting as they were shipped but then realized why they said to adjust them before install after i lowered the car i couldn't slide the jack out from under. they go pretty low but the way i adjusted it was to pretty much guess on one side and test fit with wheel to about a 2 finger gap and then count the threads from bottom and adjust to same point on other side.

Thanks, do you know what is the lowest I can go without rubbing?
I have 18" wheels with 40 profile tires.
Thanks for the respond, D_CeLiRaToR!

2 finger gap is about as low as i'd go on a dd. also depends on how wide the tire is though. my 225/40/18's would rub slightly with the wheels locked.

Yes, your tire dimension is the same as mine.
So, your car is 2 finger gap height? How many inches of drop is that?
Thanks, man...

I've seen your thread about after you've installed the coilover, clunking noise occured. Is that the endlinks? What's wrong with it? Do you have any tips for me to prevent that? And one studid question, are you using TEIN BASIC? :)
Thanks, bro.

yes i have the basics. the noise was from a bolt on the rear (stock) endlink being stripped and unable to be tightend fully. i got a new endliink and it fixed the problem. it helps if you raise the whole front/back at the same time. takes some tension off of the stabilizer bars.

For the rear struts, which one do I have to remove first, the three bolts on the top or the endlinks?
How come did you strip the rear endlink bolts?
Were they really hard to lock/release? I've always been worried of those bolts-stripping stuff.
Do you suggest me to buy new endlinks for the rear?
If yes, where can I buy them?
Can I just use the stock ones?
Thanks, man! :)

unbolt the endlinks first then the top mount bolts to drop it down. the endlink bolts are tricky sometimes because you need an allan wrench to hold the threads and keep them from spinning and sometimes the bolt are rusted stuck. you don't have to buy new endlinks for the rear unless you mess them up like i did. they are around 60 a piece so try not to mess them up.

Thanks, man. Can you list what are the tools necessary for installing the coilovers? I can't find it on the thread that I posted above. Anyone?

The same tools that are needed to install any other suspension. Look in the write up.

You will need a spring compressor.

I thought we don't need spring compressor for coilovers?
I don't see him mentioning about spring compressor in that write up....

he didn't need a spring compressor because the tein ssp's come with mounts(p=pillowball mounts) the basics to not. i didn't use one but they are recommended because you need to remove the stock mounts and it keeps everything from flying all over. otherwise just make sure to remove the top nut slowly and have the spring facing away from your face/limbs. it comes off with a little pop but will not shoot the spring through the wall or anything. but if you have access to a spring compresser i'd use it.

and yes you need the same tools for any suspension work: wrenches, rachets, sockets, breaker bar/air tools optional, pb blaster, jack, jack stands, and an allen key for the links.

Thanks. But I need to know the specific size, for ex: the size of the sockets (mm), the size of the wrenches, etc.
Do you still have them in mind?

by the way, spring compressors could be rented at Autozone for free. Just give them a deposit and get it back when you return the compressors.
