Is it illegal to race (stoplight racing) if you don't take it past the speed limit?

yes. accessive acceleration or some **** is typically what they'll nail ya with, along with street racing charges.

they can right you a ticket for dong a burnout. if you peel out at a light, they can give you one for some stupid reason, i forget. but the easy way to get out of those is to just say that you are still learning how to drive a standard.

so basically just race if you're pretty sure cops aren't around? How much is one of those tickets?

I got my first ticket for what he called, an "improper start" in my 98 Civic Dx, it was like midnight and i tried to explain to him it was an accidednt. When he saw me do it he actually proceeded to chase me for about a mile. i was in a bad neighborhood and didnt know it was a cop so i was doing like 65 in a 45 and he was on my a** the whole time, he gave me a warning for that but i think he was in the wrong for it.

It's usually not worth the risk. I find that my big @ss 17s prevent me from doing street racing. I baby my 17s :) Besides they make me slower anyway. I suggest saving it for the track. They can nail you with some nasty crap that your insurance company will not like. You better believe I love getting up on it in though... to the redline... and beyond! lol There are no laws against using your car's horsepower the last time I checked. Just gotta be tactful about it.

There's a couple ways they can nail you that I know of, although they probably vary from state to state. Here in AZ you can get pulled over for exhibition of speed, exhibition of acceleration (I think), and "drag racing" which they define as not allowing another car to pass you, so technically you could get a drag racing ticket even if you were only doing 5 mph. The drag racing one is nasty. It puts 8 points on your license, which is enough to end up having it suspended for a year. Again, these probably are somewhat different in your state.
