Today, I was lucky enough to share a table with a Japanese engineer at work (Toyota mfg. plant in Fremont) for lunch. He barely speaks English so most of our conversation consisted of 1 to 2 word responses. He was telling me he's gone on two business trips to the plant where they make Corollas in Japan and seen how it looks. He kept empasizing "very wide." He also said "250 cc" and V6" with "all wheel drive." I'm guessing the IS250 engine. Then he mentioned there were three body styles in Japan - hatch, wagon, and sedan. A little later, my American boss joined us and said the U.S. will get a 2.4L. I'm guessing tC engine. And front-wheel drive. We will only get the sedan version, but he did say it will look sexy... with characteristics akin to the current IS3. But overall it seems Japan will get the better trims and we will be screwed yet again in the States. This is all word-of-mouth, but considering where it came from, very believable.

Nobody cares, huh? Not even a "I'll believe it when I see it" reply? I thought it would be of some interest. I'll post juicier (still credible) info next time. OK, I'll be going now... :echoes: :hide:

I'd like to see the AWD Hatch version, but that won't happen here in America. It would tarnish Toyota's image of being boring and stuffy.

Its a Corolla
why should anybody care?
Overweight, underpowered, solid rear axle, open differential . . . need I go on?

^We'll see how it performs when it comes out.
You work in NUMI??
Yep, I do work at NUMMI. Just on co-op, though. That Japanese guy, Hajime-san, was nice enough to give me a Toyota engineer's jacket straight from Japan. You find the zipper on the left side instead of the right. And I custom made that buckle from a '04 Celica's "T" emblem.

Japanese are very into Western culture, so my cowboy hat for his jacket was a fair trade. Don't have a mullet, but I've got a fro-hawk!! It wouldn't all fit in the picture so I left it out. Plus people would get jealous of my awesome hair. :headbang:

Oh, not only him. Everyone around work seems pretty excited for the model change. But then they're very biased because of company pride. Very few know factual details. I should ask this one mechanical engineering co-op who also goes to my school. He's worked with the actual engineering drawings, but only sections of the Corolla, and hasn't seen the big picture. I'll bug him for details this week if I see him.
lets see a 2500 lb RWD Corolla

Rumors say that Corolla will be divided into 2 cars: one for poor countries and another one for rich ones.
This is one of the latest photos that uses ideas from the prototype FSC:

The current Motortrend has some pictures of the new corolla. Nothing at all like that picture. I don't think the ride will be much different then the current car the shock and strut valving isn't really changing,

There are many different photos of the new Corolla.
Some sources say that the new Corolla had had a very dull exterior, but after the appearance of the new Euro Civic, Toyota decided to make it more agile.

I beleive that it has been confirmed by Toyota that this will not be the next US Corolla. The US corolla will take more from the Auris concept.
I do like the fact that they have a working CVT in these. I wonder how long it will take them to introduce that stateside seeing as how DCX and Nissan both have CVT's in several cars.
It is a more evolutionary change from the older corolla. But, I don't think that is going to pass over well in the States.

Toyota, in its seemingly never ending quest for world domination, targets the mostly untapped Chinese market with a redesigned Chinese-market Corolla.
Looking much like a diminutive Camry, the 10th iteration of the China-bound Corolla will be on display starting Saturday at the 2006 Beijing International Automotive Industry Exhibition along with 28 other Toyota models including the Lexus RX400h hybrid.
According to Autoblog China, the new Corolla will have the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder we get in our version, but theirs will have a 6-speed manual instead of our 5-speed.
Also, according to a Toyota press release, the Corolla's Chinese name will be changed from Hua Guan to Ka Luo La. No, seriously.

The JDM sedan version has a slightly different front, less Camry-like than this one, with a grill that has vertical slits and different headlights, giving it a more "upscale" look. I don't know which one the US will be getting, but something tells me it's gonna be this one, if the look of the US Camry and Yaris is anything to go by.
Ka Luo La LOL :chuckles:

I hope the next gen Corolla looks like this, or the hatch concept they released not too long ago. And I hope they Axe the 1ZZ in favor of a 2.0 with more torque.
BTW, you really should spend less time on autoblog.

If the JDM website is any indication, it's still going to be a 1.8 liter, but not the 1ZZ-FE. It's gonna be the 2ZR-FE DVVT-i (dual vvt-i) 136hp and 130 lb-ft

I remember reading about that. Seem's like it will be better than what we have now.
I'd love to see them use the 2.4, but it's toyota, they won't do that.

I happen to like the JDM Corolla styling better, but this one is sportier.
There's a clear family resemblance developping from the Vios to the Yaris, to this one to the Camry.
