are they the dumbest, most ignorant, least qualified, stupid, assholes out there? i mean they( or the majority of them) dont know **** about our cars? WHY? especially if there are aftermarket parts in it....how dumb can they be....im no mechanic and i know more about aftermarket then they do.....if they see aftermarket they auto matically think turbo or ecu reprogramming or something like that and they wont even dare to troubleshoot your issues....fukin' retards!!!

i say this because my car has been acting up lately and i took it in to the dealer to check my air induction system and the bastard was too scared because i had a CAI on it....so he doesnt even bother to check to see whats wrong so he just speculates and tells me what it might be......no diagnostics or anything......and then my tach and speedo is out because i fuked with it, and he spends one hour ripping my car apart to see if the ecu has been tampered with and to see if any routing to the cpu and ecu is blown or detached......dumb fuk....i come in and tell him to run a diagnostic test on it and so he does,....he finds out that everything is fine, so that leaves the problem to be in the gauge itself, well, duh, i already knew that since i fuked it up.....what he was suppose to do was to figure out a way to fix the provlem in the gauge but after the diagnostic test, i just said screw it and left with my car......

if he would've just done what i wanted in the first place i wouldnt have waited for three hours and i woulndt have had to pay his dumb ass so much $.......all i wanted was a diagnostic test done to both problems.....not tear my car a part first then the diagnostics test later........

sorry for such a long post.......yeah my speedo and tach are still out of order......and clues on how to fix it would be deeply appreciated!!!!!

Hmm, I must be missing something.

Toyota mechanics are used to OEM cars and parts, if you ask him to diagnose your CAI, he will probably have no more of a clue that you do. Also, did you tell him that you screwed up your gauges? Or did you leave that part out? What kind of problems exactly are you having?

No - they are OEM techs that are payed flat rate - in other words they get paid preset amounts for any given job, hence they view any kind of extended diagnostics as loosing money. And why SHOULD they know anything about the aftermarket? Do you have any IDEA how many different models and variations on models Toyota makes? Do you think dealer techs have time to read forums like us - especially when they have to try and come to terms with things like 300V hybrid drive systems? They are Factory trained Dealer techs - under no obligation to know or learn about aftermarket mods and their results. Now on top of that the auto industry as a whole has a drastic shortage of trained technicians.

I mean think about it, all the smart kids from your school, they are probably all Comp-Sci majors, Doctors, Lawyers, etc. Have YOU ever been a dealer tech for any car line? Its hard back-breaking work, its poorly rewarded - and the last thing you want to have to do is learn a whole new system thats been added onto a car by someone that probably doesn't know too much about what they are doing. Especially not when the tech probably only ever has to work on a scant few of the cars due to their rarity compared to everythign else Toyota builds. The dealer doedn't give these guys GTSs to take home at night, probably the only ones they ever get to drive are in for service, from the parking lot to their service stall, and back again. You know a lot more about whats normal and what isn't than they do and its important to communicate your problems clearly.

Now all of that having been said - yes, most dealer techs are not very smart. But they are all you've got so its YOUR job to give them as much information about the problem and symptoms as you can, as clearly as you can. And there are SOME good techs out there - they are just unfortunately few and far between.

Anyways I'm not saying techs cant be morons and jerks and whatnot - just don't go slamming all of them because the one you got stuck with didn't whip out his magic wand and fix your car in 10 seconds or less.

Ya gotta remember - they perform a very necessary function in a job that is basically undesirable to most of us, sometimes you have to be patient and try to work with them instead of against them... Techs and guys who mod their cars usually don't get along... so try to be the bigger man of the two. Be patient, keep your cool, and try to help steer them in the right direction. And most of all don't expect them to be something they aren't.

Anyways - about your speedo and tach - You might want to try taking the combo meter apart and re-seating all wires and connections. Simply pulling the needles off shouldn't have damaged anything permanantly and most likely theres just a connection somewhere that needs to be seated properly.

besides aren't there in the warranty codes difficulty levels for certain jobs that they award to the higher qualified more experienced techs... i'm pretty sure they didn't give my engine swap to the oil change guy ... did they?

Toyota Mechanics are not responsible for aftermarket stuff u put inside ur car. They are only specialized what Toyota corp. trained them to do.

Now if you want someone who would like to fix/install aftermarket stuff, I would suggest bringing ur car to Autozone or Pepboys or any car mech.

maybe you should be ripping the service advisor not the tech, maybe the advisor didnt give the tech the right info or maybe you didnt give the advisor the right info. advisors need to get detailed info from the customer for the tech to understand the concern. at our shop since we're a small unit the techs often approach the customer to try to pinpoint the customers concern.

That's not that bad. I had brought my car in for some tranny work (syncro needed to be replaced). They denied there was ever a problem with them. Then, when they actually did fix it, they forgot to put the plug back in the tranny.

I also brought my MR2 in to ToyoMoto to see about getting the motor rebuilt (standard rebuild) and they refused cuz when they popped the hood, they were lost and said they wouldnt know what to do with it.

At least they were honest, and didnt begin the job and **** it up!!! I think......

i've had a good experience with my service advisors and particullarly my technicians...i was in and out of service for like 3 months trying to solve a CEL and i think they went out of their way to help me .... eg gettin someone from headquarters to see any solutions, giving me an OBD II reader so that i can take snapshots when the CEL came on and a bunch of others... i don't blame them for taking like 4 months to finally fix it... cause i know they did their work.

You know when the "mechanic" needs to actually CARE about his job and the customer? WHEN THE customer is paying ****in $70 dollars an hour for maintenance thats when. I think NEW_NAME is right, if he's paying for someone- especially a "mechanic" who supposedly is the shiznit on these cars- to diagnose and find the cause of the problem, they need to be upfront about it and tell him either A) "hey man we dont know about aftermarket items" or B) "Yes we can take your hard earned money and look at your car for 3 hours and actually give you some kind of answer." I dont care if its the dealer, what i'm sayin is he paid XX amount of dollars and they just took the money, parked the car in the garage for while, had some dumbass with no ambition go and play stupid looking at a car for a few hours and then the manager went out there and said, "....okay you spent too much time on this one..." and they collect the money and kick him out the door.. I know all about this first hand- I'm a mechanic and i know how this sh_t works. You just have to be picky about what you tell them to look at, be VERY SPECIFIC.
