im looking at buying a 2000 GT-S. Silver with 77xxx original miles.
The car has a salvage title. Only the hood, ds fender, and bumper were replaced that i can tell. It has no air bags! the old panels were just glued down(strreing wheel and passenger)....everything else is SEEMS to be in ok conditon. Any idea what i should pay? owner was asking $6500 OBO. and will go down. any help will be appreciated. thanks

it looks like the frame was straightened but no engine work. Everything seems to line up good, and it drives perfectly, everything mechanicly seems good.

Same here only own salvage cars, save lots of money on them and drove it for 2 years and for a year it was turbo , and no problems. Just look to see what kind of damage was done and how well it was repaired. Frame damage is not to great though.

salvager cars are nice if you plan on keeping it for a long time since the value is not worth as it would be if it wasn't in a wreck i wouldn't mind finding a supra that was salvage tho and insurance companies total anything that has a big dent in it. example : the door could be smashed in and they would automatically salvage (just figure of speech)
Can usually figure like 30-40% off of book value for Salvage, private party sale....
I'd be thinking more around the $4,250-$5K mark..
You'd also need to know if it passes a Safety inspection w/o airbags.

well im getting my second salvaged celica getting ready to be done soon but my first salvaged title gts only ran me about 3500 and all it needed was paint and a windshield. i would probably offer 4000-4500 for it at the most! cause you never know what was actually wrong with it. another thing you could do is take a friend with you to have him check it out and make it someone that would know or could tell maybe what happened to it!

way you can tell is by looking at then vin numbers on parts. for example if vin of vehicle doesnt match the sticker on the fender then the fender was changed, engines have vin numbers to.

true true...he really really didnt want to go $3500, i told him 4 was the absolute most i would go and im pretty sure he will call back and agree in the next day or 2. hope im getting a good deal but its hard to tell
....i think ill do it?
no airbags, bumper has a crack in it, and little paint chips around the front end(hood, bumper), nothing i cant live with. everything else looks good.

Yeah, it's a pretty good deal. You can find airbags here anyways (you'll want them) for under $1000 (meaning both). I know the steering wheels are around $400 (whole). I don't know about the passenger side. It's gonna be harder.
As for the bumper and paint, just buy a body kit from the saved money. Then repaint the car. :)
BTW, where'd you find your salvaged Celi?

just got lucky, found a local guy in IN(im in Louisville KY). Airbags are pretty cheap on ebay($350-450) but i dont know if i should try to install them myself. I was thinking since they fixed everything but airbags, maby something electronic is screwed up. Dont have any idea what it would cost to have them installed tho. I might just look out for people parting out to find a bumper or something, or get a bodykit.

That's a yellow flag, IMO. Why go to all that trouble to rebuild something, supposedly the right way, and then do a half-assed job on the airbags?

yeah i thought the same thing. Maby the electronics are screwed up and airbags wont work or stay in or sumthin. kinda sketchy. but then again they are expensive if you do them the right way

This is probably a dumb question so forgive me for asking, but are there any insurance problems that come with a car with a salvage title? What about financing the purchase, or do you have to pay cash? I heard that credit unions won't finance a car with a salvage title. Thanks!

honestly i have no idea really, i would imagine insurance doesnt care. I am paying cash if i get it, usually get a better deal that way anyways. He hasnt called back yet so im thinking he wants more than 4 : ( o well

No, it's the same as any other car. Rates are exactly the same. The insurance company doesn't care about where the car has been.

Depends on the lending institution so your answers will vary. The big question is why someone would want to finance a car with a salvage title to begin with.

Sure am. My old car was totalled, and I had to get a salvage title for it. The rear bumper was about a foot farther in than usual after the crash, and when I got it pulled out for a couple grand it still wasn't straight. I figure If a car worth ~10K was totalled, then that ****er was totalled.

As for financing... for one thing... if my money can earn more % than the rate of the loan from an investment... financing allows me to still make some $'s. But, my salvaged Celica was considerably more than $4K.

I don't know how you do it, but in Illinois I could have bought my wrecked car back, but it would have been a Salvage Title, and it is no longer allowed to be driven on the street ... at least in that state.
Salvage Title - A Salvage Title is issued on a vehicle damaged to the extent that the cost of repairing the vehicle exceeds ~ 75% of its pre-damage value.. This damage threshold may vary by state. Some states treat Junk titles the same as Salvage but the majority use this title to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that state. The following ten States also use Salvage titles to identify stolen vehicles - AZ, FL, GA, IL, MD, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OK and OR.
They have to be inspected prior to registration:
In NH:
The inspection of the vehicle shall include verification of the vehicle identification number and bills of sale or titles for major component parts used to rebuild the vehicle. The department shall also issue a decal bearing the legend
