Hello,
I have been following this site/bbs for weeks. And am now going to buy a new 2002 Celica, but should I spend more for a GTS if I am getting an automatic? Should I get the GT instead? Or should I get a Eclipse GT or Acura or something, since the Celica GT only has 140 horse power. Is the Celica GTS that much faster than the GT???
Oh, I don't race or drive really wild if that will help... I just want some acceleration.
Thanks,
Jon

You want an auto. You don't race. You don't drive wild. Save money for something else like a good home theater and get like a used Honda Civic DX.

Well, I want a sporty car, but something that has power to pass someone on the parkway or go up a hill. I have always wanted a Celica, but 140 hp seems too weak... but then again, 180 hp at the RPM you need to get to is impossible it seems.

If you don't read or drive wild then a auto GTS should satisfy you. I have one and it satisfies me most of the time. Only when you race, do you want a manual. But who knows you might start to like to race and that's when you regret getting an auto.
If you must get an auto, then get something w/ torque. Have you considered a Camry or Accord. The Solara and the Accord coupe seems sporty plus they have V6's. And there are a bunch of aftermarket parts for both cars, especially the Accord.
But the decision is up to you, just go test drive the GT and see how you like it.

Thanks for the reply... yeah, I guess I am beginning to wonder if a GTS with automatic is worth it. I am thinking GT now. As for a camery or accord... I am looking for a sporty car.

get the gt. if you are certainly going to get an automatic and you aren't into racing, then i would suggest the gt. the gt-s auto isn't that much faster than the gt auto. especially at normal driving rpms. the gt-s and vvtli will give you a little bit more passing power on the interstate, but the gt does fine.
i say go test drive them both and let em go all the way up to redline and see what the acceleration is like. then see if the difference in accel is worth the difference in price. also, you do get 4 wheel discs, better stereo, and all the options standard on the gt-s. most of the options you can get on the gt though. also, youll save on insurance and gas with a gt.
If youre gonna get auto don't even bother with the GTS. Just get a GT or something like a mustang or camaro

like greg said, if u want a "sporty" car that has some power that is a automatic...go w/ mustang or camaro......no offence to those that have an auto GT-S, but in my opinion that is not worth the 4-5g's that u spend between the gt and the gt-s auto......just get some 1 that u know, to teach u to drive stick or take some classes and u will thank ur self for doing so in the long run:p.....i did not know how to drive a stick when i got my car about 8 months ago....but i'm thanking my friends who thought me how to drive manual cuz i enjoy my car a loooooooooot more now :D

I hope you were kidding, if youre not then the Celica is not for you. Go with a Mustang or Camaro instead.
if you are looking for an auto that can accelerate. i'd go with an RX-7 i've seen some for less than 15k and they have low miles.

get a 5 speed gt, then when a good turbo kit comes out spend the money you saved by buying a gt on that. that should give you enough acceleration

just take the manual gt-s for a test drive. I'm fifteen and had never even shifted a gear before and I could drive the celica. Driving stick is not as hard as it seems on paper. Also when i drove the manual 6-spd i could notice lots more power.
If you still don't want a stick I'd suggest going with a Stratus R/T. They look pretty cool and they have an eclipse v6 sitting under the hood.

auto GT is nice....i got one, and although i'd like to drive manual .... i live near LA and traffics sucks, and we all know stop and go = bad for manual. i can pass fast enough.... if u think about it, most cars on the road are smaller econoboxes like civics, corollas and such. they have less hp than the gt, and heavier (i think) so u can pass them easily.... Suvs are no problem either, thanks to their less efficient gear ratios. so auto gt is good for style and convenience. if u want to go fast, maybe get a domestic... but toyotas in general are reliable.....my cousins celica is 8 years old and still going strong... not many domestics can boast that......... like maelfyn says, auto gt is the best platform for a show car, so if u want that, auto gt
im EXTREMELY biased, but heres mah $.02

Thanks you guys for all your input. I am probably going to go with the Celica GT automatic.

I'd test drive the Celica GT Auto, and decide if that feels good to you. If you feel that you need more power (and can sacrafice handling and braking in favor of a softer ride), I would have to suggest the Eclipse GT instead, due to it's V6. I wouldn't consider the GT-S auto, as it will not feel much different below 6000 RPM than the GT, and if the GT does not feel powerful enough, then either will the GT-S. Generally, due to low torque output, 4-cylinder cars are not well suited to automatic transmissions.
Now, if you drive enthusiastically, and prefer the dynamics of a manual transmission, I'd suggest either Celica GT or GT-S, as they are excellent performers when mated to manuals, and their handling and braking are outstanding.
The new Celica is not for everyone. It used to be more like a sport touring model for a larger market, but now it has become a focused performer. Ironically, the previous Eclipse was more of a performer, and now it has become a grand touring car to cater to a larger audience; It's almost like Mitsubishi and Toyota swapped cars.
Drive 'em both, preferrably on the same day, and you'll know what you want. ;)
