05's have drive by wire (I think) and require a completely different ECU.

Yes, the 03+ 2zz motors are diferent from the 00-02 models. Other than the drive-by-wire system on the 03-05 motor, the 04-05 2zz has a different header system.

Wouldn't an 05 2zz motor cost much more than a 00-02?

Isn't the basic engine the same for all the years? I thought there was no difference in the longblock itself.

the longblock is the same on the 2zz its just the newer style header, and the dbw system.

You can reuse your old parts though, you'll just have to block off the air injection ports on the back of the head. As far as i know only the knock sensor will be different as far as sensors. The intake manifold should be the same (minus the throttle cable holder), but the throttle body wont be the same. You'll have to use the old one.

i think everything else should be straight forward if your going 2zz to 2zz.

i have a 03 engine in my car and everything else is all 00. the engines are all the same, just the 03+ have drive by wire, different throttle body, different header, a different knock sensor, different harness for the knock sensor, and a different ecu, and the 05 have a lower fuel cut off, i think the cutoff is the same as the 02.
