Hi Everyone,

Here's some photo's for those who were interested. I did this install and just finished it from beginning to end. So here's a small review on Dooly's TRD Center Tach Gauge Face Conversion for the GT that I've been waiting for and I'm very very pleased with it. I thought I'd post up the photo's once I've organized them now since they are finally organized here they are.

I highly recommend this install for a number of reasons. Anyway, Sean guided me through the process with well guided instructions. This is my first time doing this as I had speculated over it for a few weeks but after doing the install I'm very pleased. Below are some photo's I took during the process and some detailed shots for those who are getting these or going to do the custom gauge face conversion. I decided to do the L.E.D's swap and center tach conversion on my GT all at once as it was going to be all opened anyway. After going over some questions & answers with Sean I recommend to do the following below and plan out exactly what you want to do before stepping into the project. If you don't feel you can't do it or feel like you might ruin something Sean can do the install for you. I happened to just follow his instructions and it went real well.

These gauges are great very bright and can be controlled with the factory dimmer. No more aftermarket dimmer switch, drilling holes into the dash area, no more high pitched noise I use to get when I had the aftermarket white face, and the finish is very professional. It's amazing how close the finish matches my cars custom paint job. It has this nice elegant metallic silver look to it in the photo's as the pictures don't do justice. I made sure the cluster was working correctly by following the calibration and also compared it to my GPS. The conversion works. These are the best gauge conversion overlay I have ever purchased. Well, anyway read on, for more info below:

1. TRD Center Tach Face Overlay
2. L.E.D. Install (25 Blue & 2 Red plan out which ones you prefer to light up your color choice)
3. Needle Motor Rewired
4. Needles Painted (Removed Repainted on Backside Silver)
5. Partition Fixed due to color bleeding and faded area's (Needle Motor was Removed/Reinstalled)
6. Test, Calibrate

L.E.D. Install 25 Blue & 2 Red - Questions

SLVR Stealth: Installation - Regarding the 27 L.E.D.s contained in the package mainly where do the two red l.e.ds. go? And the other blue 25 l.e.d. that came in the package?
Dooly77 LV: One red L.E.D. & couple of blue L.E.D.'s are spare. Spares can be used for other indicators.
SLVR Stealth: What do you prefer I should use them for?
Dooly77 LV: It's your choice. I usually change all the indicators...
SLVR Stealth: Do I have enough to do that? With 25 blue?
Dooly77 LV: No.. You'll need like 10 more. Most people likes to keep the indicator stock so that the indicators are noticeable if something lights up forreal.. CEL indicator is the most important light so, people like it too stand out more from other blue colors.. But for me.. I have no problem.. So I changed it.. I know for sure.. You should change the Headlight, Brake, and Door. Since Headlight always is on at night time.. The green light will throw off the blue lights if you don't change it..
SLVR Stealth: So for the center tach 1 red L.E.D. is used for the farthest right that says optional in the guide? And the 5 other L.E.D.'s use the blue. Total's out to make 6 l.e.ds. for the center tach?
Dooly77 LV: Yes..
SLVR Stealth: And for the left side the speed (mph) are the rest their just all blue?
Dooly77 LV: Yes.
SLVR Stealth: I'd like to use all of them without having extra's but I need your expert advice where should I put them.
Dooly77 LV: High beam, you need to replace it with LED bulb.. Also the turn-signal. CEL would be good for red.. it stands out from blue.
SLVR Stealth: Tell me if this sounds good
SLVR Stealth: left tach (4) l.e.d. blue, center tach (5) l.e.d blue (1) red, (13) blue odomoeter
spare 3 blue l.e.d. - door, brake, headlight
last 1 red l.e.d. - cell
Dooly77 LV: Sounds good..
SLVR Stealth: The indicators have this blue tint in them or is it just me?? i love it
Dooly77 LV: Yea.. It does.. Little bit.. It shouldn't effect much with other colors... They are very light smoke color..

"Center Tach Conversion Questions"

SLVR Stealth: Just finished the conversion. L.E.D & center tach but number 7 on the RPM band hardly shows can it be fixed? And it mixes with the lettering D on TRD which looks purple. It functions great though & lights up super bright. RPM range 1 through 6 light and 8 & 9 light up fine. But 7 is dim an appears lost. I also painted the back side of the needles silver to give it a metal look and L.E.D's reflect the light off the needles great!!! I must say.
Dooly77 LV: Light bleeding. It's how it is.. If you use blue & red LED.. There is a fix for it, but it's little tricky. You'll have to add a partition to separate the light. Trimming & putting some tape then painting some white out in those area's to make it brighter will fix it.. To fix it use a Dremel to cut through the dim area just take your time cutting around the area's that don't light up.. If you use white L.E.D.'s it will fix the bleeding problem.. Cut out that section add use electric tape to separate the light. Then paint it white for more light to reflect.. Make the wall stand up by taping it on the squiggly line. It's complete blocks the light, and won't melt or cause an electrical problem. Just cut it slowly.. Back lit the area with a lamp then trace the cutting area with a marker or white out the section to be cut. #7 doesn't light too well since it's kind of far from the red LED.. The mixing of the blue and red L.E.D.'s will bleed through making it look purple and will look darker too. Once you do the fix it will light up better though with the trimmings. You want to trim a little more around the 7 and 8 area.
SLVR Stealth: Question regarding calibrating the needles. I put the ignition to on without turning the car on. Then put the needles on without the stoppers like in your diagram. is that right? When I put them on do I put them on to the right of the gauge? how do I put the stoppers back on afterwards? Do I swing the needles to the left then put the stoppers in or put the stoppers in first then swing the needle all the way around?
Dooly77 LV: needle stopper doesn't matter.. You can put the needle stopper back on anytime.. That needle calibration guide is old.. I've done some more testing & needle stopper doesn't matter if it's on or off.. Basically.. Put the key to ON.. Without starting the car.. Put the needle back on the location from the diagram..If you didn't put the needle stopper back on.. Plug it in..Then spin the needle counter close wise.. Back to 0 position.. Then you are done..
SLVR Stealth: so it can go counter clock wise. And it will still be accurate. just making sure so I don't break the motor or something.
Dooly77 LV: Yes.. As long as you put the needle just like on the diagmam.. it's accurate.. Needle motor is magnetically controlled, so it spins freely. You can spin the needle around all they and it wont' effect anything.
Dooly77 LV: For the left speed mph side... trick I use is... turn on the headlight... and place the needle barely touching the headlight indicator logo..
Dooly77 LV: For the center side... needle is barely touching the needle stopper..(on the right side of the needle stopper) that's with the ignition set to on without the motor on. So, Key will be set to on... without starting the engine... for both sides..
SLVR Stealth: I'll probably road test it with my GPS. Do u no if it's normal when the car is turned off without the stopper for both the needles to fall past zero and bounce back up to zero once you open the door?
Dooly77 LV: Yes.. That's normal.. If you notice that..
SLVR Stealth: the red L.E.D. the one for the rpm I put in if I swap that one with on of the blue L.E.D's. will it make it all blue will # 7 light up? With no bleeding or is It's going to be kind of dim if you put blue LED there.. Or is the red L.E.D. fine there.
Dooly77 LV: It doesn't light up well with blue LED on red area..
SLVR Stealth: I love the way it looks really awesome and the texture is very professional has a nice texture like OEM and the silver is better than I thought like silver flake looks sooo clean matches my custom paint job. I think u outdid yourself this time it is the best by far I no longer need for 12v power supply my aftermarket gauge face uses that makes this high pitched noise or run wires all over the place. it it's very annoying and u can't control the dimmer. Without a switch that looks. yours is very very quality the car should come like this to begin with. Hope this helps you all installing yours. Thanks Sean!

I did the conversion myself on the car, not sure if its just a loose connection in the soldering but when I hit lift in any gear, and my RPM's get around 7k, I see my speedo start to rise with my RPM's, then when I lay off the gas, it drops down to my actual speed. for example, using random numbers, I'm doing 60 KMph at 3k RPM, I hit lift and go to 7k RPM, all of a sudden my speedo points to 140 Kmph, I lay off the gas, the rpm's settle down and the speedo then points to 100Kmph. Its as if the signals going to the Tach is being send over to the speedo (where the tach used to be) I'll have to go over my cuts and snips just to make sure, but it only happens at high RPM's 6000+ Gets kinda annoying when I'm trying to judge my speed while in lift haha.

It's usually the circuit trace isn't cut through enough.. shine a flash light behind it.. any show will show that there is circuit trace...
Also make sure wires are soldered on well... any loose connection will have needle fluctuation....

just a quick question also, why do you have to use a dremmel and cut out the plastic that hovers over the 7 and 8, woudln't that stop them from being lit up with red? why not just make a 5mm incesion between the 6.9K RPM and 7K RPM range?

Here's a pic of what Sean means of the bleeding before and after and one with the cutting and partition. Sean also has a secret way of doing this without cutting by adding L.E.D.'s in area's as well.

I decided not to put the needle stoppers back as well. Reason why there's a blue dot under the silver needles. I painted the needles on the back side it made the dials glow more around that area.

Bleeding Before (needles weren't calibrated yet just tested the lighting):

After: (needles after calibration also notice how the red L.E.D. around 7,8, and around x1000rpm, the TRD reflects blue more as well and no more purplish color.)

Yea I understand what he means by putting up that wall, in your pics it looks red on one side, Im just wondering why you dremelled out part of the plastic, is that just so you have a place to attach the wall since it would be easier to tape?

Yes... if you can come up different idea...
That is the best way I can think of...
Since if you don't cut that part out and attach the wall, you'll see have room there that light will pass through the clear part and cause bleeding...
It's used red tape(?) on here, but it was painted white afterward...

No problem, glad you're getting helped I agree It's the easiest way to separate the light. I tried too experimenting with cardboard, and paper it didn't work as it kept getting crumpled and it was harder to shape. But I finally got the urge to dremel it out. The electric tape is safe and it won't cause a fire or electrical problem. I used red tape to make it show more I follow Sean's method by using the white out. It actually makes the tape hold securely like a wall once it's dried up it stiff like plastic.

Remember you don't need to cut a wall you can do the other option Sean's can explain it better than I can. It has to do with extra L.E.D.'s in addition running the wires where you can get the power from either the exterior or interior of the cluster he has a little trick explained to me. You can make every number a different color if you wanted but you will have to do a lot of intricate work cutting.

verbal272 let us know if you get those motors working properly. I can send you high- res photo's of how deep I went in the board let me know if you need it. I just sliced, sratched, and scraped, with an exacto knife until the copper disappeared I went wide with the cutting it worked on the first try. Make sure you snipped those metal legs for the motor and push them aside as well so they don't make contact. Double check that your wiring is connected and soldered securely in the right area's. Just be careful, follow Seans write up it helps a lot and cut towards the circuit not away.

Looks sweet, but isn't it kind of bright/distracting while driving at night?

Anyways, is you entire dash wrapped in cf :hitit:

That's what the dimmer is for. I have mine set to full blast. You can set it to how bright you'd like it. I took a ton of pics even stages of the glow with the dimmer in intervals but those are the only ones I thought were important. Anyway, you get the point.

So no sir, it's not distracting at all if anything it's pleasing to look at instead of amber orange that really irritated my eyes when I bought the car 7 years ago and I'm not squinting at the numbers no more so it's a good thing.

Yes sir, the dash is CF.

Tomac I just followed Dooly's guide here: http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=205565

But here's a pic of what I did with 27 L.E.D's that were supplided Dooly (Sean) sent me. I used the spare three blue L.E.D.'s (for door, brake, headlight) and soldered those after Sean and I confirmed which ones won't bleed and went over that these indicators would always stay on. You can replace all of the L.E.D's all one color but you need more depending on the color you want.

I also kept the important indicators red so I can immediately notice when they go off being they are a different color. The red ones don't always stay on you'll only see them when you first turn the ignition on after that they turn off after 3 seconds. I thought I ran out of L.E.D's after changing the "Cell" indicator but to my surprise the "oil" and "battery" were already red when I tested the L.E.D's so I didn't touch those I left it as is. I was very pleased it worked out well. Anyway here's more detail...

25 blue and 2 red...

01. Speed Tach - (4) L.E.D. Blue
02. RPM Center Tach - (5) L.E.D blue (1) Red
03. LCD - (13) L.E.D. Blue
04. Spare - (3) Blue L.E.D. - Door, Brake, Headlight
05. Last - (1) Red L.E.D. - Cell

Can we get a more detailed writeup on the red/blue bleeding problem at redline? I've grown tired of having purple light around there and the needle :(

SickCelica696,

Here's what I did hopefully it will help you from what Sean had explained to me:

First, I will not be responsible for any damages that might occur. There are other alternatives you can also do. Sean did do an extra L.E.D. install in bleeding area's by taking power off the circuit board and used wiring from the interior circuit board, you can also get power from the exterior of the board but the process is a bit more work. This way you don't need to cut the clear plexiglass but you will still need to seperate those new L.E.D.'s if you decide to go the individual L.E.D.'s way. Sean can explain it better than I can.

But.. I found cutting the clear lens out simple enough for me to do. Anyway, I'll say just be careful and have patience. So with that said...

- After installing the L.E.D.'s and lighting them up I took a photo of the gauge face with the L.E.D's on and where the bleeding occured. Which on my 2000 GT was around 7-8 rpm, x1000rpm, and the letter D around TRD. This will help you pin point where exactly to make a wall that will seperate the light. Just take your time it'll go along way in the end.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion078.jpg

- After that I removed the gauge face overlay again. I seperated the clear plexiglass that reflects the lighting and placed it behind the gauge face and while refering to the photo I first took and back lit the face under flourescent lighting.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/th_TRDGaugeFaceConversion088.jpg

- Mark/outline the area's with white out where the bleeding occurs. This will help you carve it out. I used a dremel with fine carving tip that works with plastic & metal. This will help you later make a wall with electric tape to seperate the light.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/th_TRDGaugeFaceConversion080.jpg (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion080.jpg)

Before cutting remove the needle motors. There are clips that hold them in place on each side becareful not to snap the clips when taking the motors out. Once the motors are out place them aside this will make it easier to cut through the plexiglass exactly. Cut out the area you marked. Once you've cut out the area rinse the shreddings off the plexiglass if you have any rough edges sand it down smooth with fine sandpaper.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/th_TRDGaugeFaceConversion082.jpg (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion082.jpg) http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/th_TRDGaugeFaceConversion083.jpg (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion083.jpg) http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/th_TRDGaugeFaceConversion084.jpg (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion084.jpg)

- Put the clear plexiglass behind the gauge face and see if the cuts need more carving take your time patiences goes a long way in the end. This is where I stopped the carving.
- With that completed cut a strip of electrical tape and tape it to the edge of your outline where you cut to make a wall to seperate the light (this will also help reflect the light better in the carved area's).
- With the eletric tape (I used red electric tape) on, test fit it. Place it on top of the white plastic piece that holds the circuit board. Push down and you'll see where the wall divides. Remove the clear plexiglass if you're satisfied with the wall seperator you're done. (If your electric tape bends a little, perfect it by cutting it out until you're happy with the wall. This part is important so the light doesn't reflect out of it's area which causes the bleeding.)
- Use white out and paint the electric tape on both sides it will help reflect the light. Once it has harden it will make a strong, stiff wall, no glue needed.

- Install the needle motors in the exact same way you removed them back into place
- Place the motors on the tabs in position. Be very careful not to break the clips that hold the motors in place, with that said push down on the centers of the motors gently they should snap and lock into place.
- Motors re-installed
- Put the clear plexiglass back and re-install everything and you are done this will fix the bleeding problem.

Awesome work SLVR Stealth.

One small question: with the needle motors in the way, how does the light shine through so strongly to the back of the needles? Is it transmitted through the two plastic "bridges" on each side of the needles, or through some other means?

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5254/graphic1ri7.jpg

I'm considering installing isolated LEDs under each needle, similarly to what Dooly did here:
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=221384&highlight=trd+gauge+red
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b284/seanyiya/TRD%20Auto%20Gauge%20Face/TRD-Upgrade-1.jpg

It's hard to see how the LEDs were installed in that custom setup. Are they on top of the motor (ie: between the plastic and the motor) and do you think this is easily feasible?

You can isolate them it would take a little more work or probably the same amount of work set some time aside so you can perfect it. Those walls Sean made are inside it does look like an illusion. You won't be able to place the overlay down if they were sticking out.

There's this hexagon ring above around that motor area . If you close you can see it reflecting the light in different directions.

Anyway, it also has something to do with the L.E.D. color and painting the needles. It didn't look like that with the stock orange needles. I removed the black plastic cap carefully used acetone to get all the orange paint off and a cotton ball I didn't want to scrape it since it will get scratched. I made sure all of the orange paint was removed. Instead of painting the entire needle. I painted only the back side of the needles on the straight pointed section for both. I kept the area around the round dial clear. I used a small tip model paint brush instead of spray painting them using a metalic silver color. Just lay your stroked evenly. Painting the backside you get a nice clear glass look if you're looking at it from the top. Just like how the stock ones are painted only on the backside. I was surprised myself. They just glow around the dials like since the circle dial area wasn't painted. The rest of the light glows around the edge of the needle. If you kept them entirely clear they will glow 10x brighter.

nicely done... still keeping the rest of your interior a secret eh?

Thanks Sultan, but no sir, no secrets here. Big fan of your interior and car all around.

I've been meaning to post up more pics just have to remember next time not to take so many pictures lol, my camera snaps 10 images per second at 300dpi on 5gb. I leave the settings on continuous. Too many photo's and it takes awhile to organize and downsize even while batching and then upload and post on the internet. These photo's are only a small amount of what I have. I'll make sure to post some up soon. You're interior is beautiful. You know how it is every image appears different even if you've shot the same photo a million times. I'm no expert but I have to limit myself next time 1 image per shot which is very hard to do if you love taking photo's. Hopefully, I'm not the only one who loves photography lol.

I understand your obsession... I caught the photography bug a few years ago as well and it takes me a few hours to categorize and eliminate duplicate shots before final process and post. My usual routine involves around 3-4 shots per angle to maximize the chance of optimal lighting and exposure settings. By the time the shoot is completed, I have around 250-300 photos to look through per backdrop. Multiply this by an average of 4-5 scenes and you'll get an idea of a typical photo session. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your work and stay tuned as I have a few surprises in store as well - ;)

great write up, thanks for going into so much depth about that, it always help :) At first thought you just cut the plastic so it was easier to put the tape up, but I guess light is also transferred through plastic and you don't want that bleeding either

thanks again man :)

I have a simple question about the LED's for the needles. Where did you tap into for the power on those?

I'm planning on doing something similar on my car. I have about 50 red LED's leftover from some projects and I was thinking of putting some there.

wow 50 left over. Sean can help you out with that. You can see a few of the wires are tapped internally on the board in that pic. Most likely the power is being shared by the other L.E.D's closest to them. PM Dooly he's the master expert of L.E.D. installation he's done this so many times he'll know 100x more tricks than an average installer.

i know im not smart or brave enough to do this so when and how can i have this done to my car? this **** is baller :)

PM "Dooly" he also offers installation if with purchase of his gauge face if you don't feel you can do it or don't want to screw anything up.

Actually, I figured out what I am going to do.

I'm going to remove the headlight indicator LED and use it to power the needle LED's. So when the headlights are off, the needles are off. Don't need them on during the daytime anyways.

And at night time, I can turn them on.

I think this would have the best effect for me.

and the 50 LED's i have are just the red ones. I have hundreds others.

I use them for little optical illusion projects. It was cheaper to buy in bulk.

PS. I just got in the gauge face I ordered from dooly, so I'll be making the swap and mods tonight.

That blows when a hard drive goes out. I know the feeling. Great job Tanner your gauge face turned out real well looks hot are those needles red? I'm thinking about putting the needle stoppers back on. Everytime I takes photo's of the interior with the doors closed the needles drop to -10mph and -1000 rpm lol. Anyway, those red needles look 10x better than the orange. I like the entire red theme you got going on. Keep it up.

Just a question for you Silver Stealth..i'm gonna do the conversion tomorrow, so i just want to know if you can still see you needle at day time in silver color? Because in your pics it appears a little bit tought to see it in the Silver RPM circle... And my other question is, do you think it will look cool, or clean if I Leave it transparent? I will just remove the orange paint on it and leave it like this to be clean...But i dont know if will see it on day condition to!

Still thinking over it. It's nice the way the dot glows blue and points to the circle.

The needles stick out so theres a shadow in the day time. Hard to tell from the pic but we've been driving the car the entire week with no problem seeing the needle over the RPM's at all. The orange just didn't look right. It does match the seat belt clip release though lol.

I too wanted to keep them clear. I think you should try it if you don't like it you can always paint the back side of them. Post pics when you get it completed. Car looks hot btw love those 19'' TRD wheels.

Yeah i think i will try it to leave it transparent, and if i see that it' too tought to see it, i will paint it silver like you.

The lighting looks a little uneven and splotchy. There's an easy fix I found.

Go to Michael's or one of those craft stores and buy a roll of white contact paper. It goes for less than $5 and is what you use for lining drawers and cabinets.

Then just take this piece out:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/RJayStyle/TRD%20Gauge%20Face%20Conversion%20LED%20Partition% 20Fix/TRDGaugeFaceConversion084.jpg

cut out a square and stick it to the top. You can use a razor blade to cut away what you don't need. Many of the holes in that thing can simply be left covered, no need to cut them back out unless there is something protruding through them. The light will hit the white contact paper and be dispersed, which will cause it to basically glow in a completely uniform manner. I also used bits of the contact paper to cover over various holes that were unnecessary in the molded white back piece.

Custom gauge face(newer) now has the diffuser layer in the back to make it even... not perfect but better from the older production....
Other color then silver, lighting is pretty much even...

Just curious. Would a chrome or aluminum contact paper work better for this? Or is white the best option?

No, you want the light to transmit thorugh the contact paper. I'm only talking about evenly distributing the light.
