Okay, I just traded out my 2k Celica automatic for a 2k six speed.. yeah I know I'm an idiot but I'm learning... could somebody give me the basics of kicking ass with the six speed or a link to any documents on it? Thanks.

just go out there and keep shifting... dont do it quickly in the beginning.. just try to get a feel for where the gates are... once you have an idea of where the gates are you can make your shifts stupid fast.

Rushing into things too fast on this car can lead to a misshift and a blown engine. Take your time and learn where the gears are. Just like you, I learned stick on this car. I took my time in the beginning and have never even come close to misshifting.

And another thing make sure you know what gear you are getting out off before you put it into whatever gear... It helps to look at revs and speed to determine which gear you should be in...

I was pretty much in the same boat as you i traded in a 98 prelude auto for a 00 gts. and learned stick on it.
First week i got it i was try to do too much and misshifted 3 times. it wasn't too bad tho i was only speed shifting when when the needle hit 5-6k. thankfully no major damage done.
the main thing that got to me was the opeing gate going to reverse when trying to upshift to 2nd gear. I remember when i first got the celi i got stuck in there and revved to like 9k twice.
but after all that it still runs like new with not one problem with over 15k miles to it. contrary to what some other ppl might say the celi can withstand a whole lotta beating.
i should know :) <~not a proud smile

Please, do yourself a favor and forget about racing for at least 2 months.

Yeah I'm serious. take it slow, that way you won't damage your tranny/engine. and you won't misshift or something worse.

ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS RULE. I think it's pretty much idiot proof.

The shifter is spring loaded, thus it will REST in between 3<--->4 . See where I'm going with this?
People that misshift, JAM the shifter from 5-6 into 1or2.

Instead of cramming it into a lower gear when you want to dowshift

LET THE SHIFTER DO THE WORK FOR YOU.

When in 5/6 simply pop the shifter out of gear and let it REST into it's natural position, now push up or down, and you will get 3 or 4. VERY EASY,.

Got a little too excited, going from the auto to 6 speed is like making the jump from impotent to Viagra, it's like a whole different car, very fun to drive.

for the 3 to 4 shift I put my thumb on the left side of the shifter
and my pointer and middle finger on the back of the shifter (between radio and shifter) and pull the shifter towards the back of the car.

I recommend doign this so you won't be postign "I just misshifted"

When I got my GTS I had been driving sticks for 10+ years already, and it still took me about a month to really get it smooth/quick. It's an odd animal, but once you get friendly with it, it's a *lot* of fun :)!

I can't wait to get mine. As a matter of fact today I woke up before work and completely de-moddified my car. Well, the only real mod I had was an intake but I also took out all the bulbs and clear corners. Lots of little stuff. Tomorrow morning I'm going to look at a Spectra Blue 6 spd. If all goes well I'll be spending my Memorial Day learning how to drive it. I'm basically ready to buy now it just takes forever for a decent 6 spd to come on the market. SO WISH ME LUCK!! It's also my first stick, so all this info has been helpful.

XmbalmR......
I'm from Arlington Heights.. where did you find your 6 spd? I'm having terrible luck finding a decent one.

Hey MillinGTS, great looking car, how can I get a hold of that CD? I had been driving sticks for 10 years, but just old 4 speeds. It's starting to feel more natural now, you can tell that transmission was made for the car. Best advice so far was from gts24, really helped to get a feel fro the shift pattern.

bLaH1031, I've been looking for a good 6 speed for awhile myself, got it at Schaumburg Toyota even though I kinda hate that place. The blue Celica you're looking at, is that at Elmhurst Toyota? A buddy of mine knows somebody that works there and sent me over to look at a blue one there, the guy that works there wouldn't sell it to me. It had been in a major front end collision, it had dent marks on the engine and the check engine light went on while test driving it.
