6 Million Honda Warranties Extended; Odometers Adding Up Miles Too Fast
Fort Smith, Arkansas resident Jay Kutchka noticed that his Honda Odyssey was adding the miles up too fast. An investigation into his claims by lawyers led to a class-action lawsuit, which now has Honda extending warranties for six million people.
They are also making payments to leasers who paid excess-mileage penalties. James Holmes, a Henderson Texas lawyer leading the case, is now going after Nissan. He found Detroit brands "by and large are perfect," adding Toyotas actually register less.
Although Honda's range of -1% to +3.75% falls within the voluntary SAE standard of +/- 4%, it will extend warranties 5% and pay at least $6 million. All of their 2007 models will have this range centered on zero, and have better accuracy.
