I was just wondering how you'll approach a red signal? What I do is put it in neutral and press on the brake, I am fully stopped, and when the light turns green I have trouble putting it in 1st, is it me or is it the car.
Also, whenever I backout of my driveway, the car makes this loud brake noise whenever I step on the brake, and thats the only time I hear it. If you can help me on this one, i'd really appreciate it. thanx
P.S. I only have 16000 miles on it

that's odd

when I'm coming up to a stop sign and I'm in 4th gear

I press the brake till I'm giong about 5 mph then I push it into 1st gear.

have you tried doubling clutching? that might do something. when you put your car into neutral give it a slight rev, then press the clutch down and pop it into 1st.

Shift into first before you come to a complete stop. Syncros often require some movement to mesh.

yes i have had that very same problem, sometime the little f*cker won't go into first gear so i start out in second :( it happened a lot before i got the short shifter, now it's not a problem anymore

try going from second to first when you are sitting at a stop some times that helps it should make it alot easier this is a comon problem with manual tranny's not just our celica's going to second and then first helps line everything up

exactly. i had the very same problem with my sold barchetta. 1st gear won't pop in sometimes (only if you really force it).

if i am at a complete stop, i went to 2nd gear and from there directly to 1st gear. that always solved the problem.

i can only explain this behaviour by that the transmission (after being in gear 3 and up) won't go back to neutral perfectly, meaning you cannot really shift into 1st gear. by shifting to second first, you physicly bring the transmission to a better neutral position, making it easier to pop in 1st?

ugh, sorry my english is really terrible ... but i guess you get my point.

thanx for all the replies, I thought I had a clutch problem. Also, if anyone can explain the problem I have when I backup from my driveway, I'd really be grateful.... Description......... My driveway is slightly tilted...and whenever I backup I sometimes hear the brakes squealing only when I step on the brakes....Do you guys think this is a warranty claim?

i'll definately check with the toyota-dealer. if this is a fairly new car this problem shouldn't be happening ... i guess that your brakes just have to calibrated or something is slightly loose and only makes sound when you brake the car while driving backwards ...

do you usually brake very hard at high speed often? or did you do this often while your car was still new?

anyway ... just check with your toyota dealer and tell em the problem ... maybe they just have to tighten a nut or bolt and the problem might be fixed ...

is your car a gt or a gts because for some reason that is also common on drum brakes I don't understand why but the break works well forward but drum brakes in reverse don't work the same and will squeak and make other sounds my nissan pick up did that backing out of my drive way. but I'm not to sue about the celica I usually have the radio up pretty loud when I'm leaving the house

When car is moving... there is some latch that makes it hard for it to put it in 1st... it's like prevents misshift kind of thing... let's say you are going 60.... accdently put it in 1st.. ahhhhhhhhhh dont watn to do that.. ^^

I don't think it's exactly a latch. It's called synchro-mesh. I might be wrong on this but basically if your output shaft (the one that goes to the wheels from the tranny) is not spinning at a close enough speed as the input shaft the gears won't mesh. Thats why you can't drop the car into 1st while doing 60.

Yeah, same thing happens to my GT, while backing up. Squeals away. It's irritating and embarrassing.
