Why not just get a coldram intake?

i know this is the newbie section...but there have been TONS of threads about this if you look around for them.

Generally, Short Ram intakes are used for people who are trying to conserve engine bay space... for superchargers, turbos, etc... extra things. Instead of cooling the engine with a little bit of cold air, they use large amounts of warm air.

You lost me there pal, IMO the CAI saves more engine bay space as for our cars the piping goes down and away to the space in front of the wheel well.

Celicas, yes, i suppose. I re-read the wikipedia article and found I had things misinterpreted. Although, shape and placement do come into play.

which is better for power then?

GSBoek

Generally believed that a CAI will be better for power, although a properly heatshielded SRI can be almost as good.

There are people here that will argue this one to death. Short simple truth, CAI is great to begin with. Short ram is great at speed, or when properly heat sheilded. Cold air = better power, the shortram's problem is it breaths air right next to the hot exhaust area of the engine.

Actually, in our cars it's the hot air coming from the radiator/fan, not the exhaust as it's in the back of the engine by against the firewall.

Go with a Rod Millen intake. It's a short ram with a heat shield. Sport Compact installed one on the Project Celica they have and loved it..We love ours as well...

I had both short ram and CAI. It was like night and day. Go with the CAI.

cleaning a cai filter is a biach-(and the possible vapor lock).......there are some shortcuts but still.

they draw in the same amount of air

a mixture of both is what i have..not a true cai, not a true sr..in b/n..i filter sit in front of the transmission with a heatshield blocking the transmission..taking it out to clean is easier then having it sit the wheel well, where it could get the chance of sucking in water when it rains out..mine is completely waterless sitting inside like the sr..i'll take pics later so u can see..

I've had great results with my AEM CAI with the BB mod. Great sound and extra boost~

And I wouldn't worry about hydrocking...unless you get flooded all the time and drive through the puddles...

For those of you that are running Injen and AEM CAIs? How many do not have a CEL? When I used to have an AEM, I had a CEL...but then maybe I installed it wrong...who knows.

alright y'all..finally took a pic and it's sh*tty..bad camera but u get the idea..i've had this on for a long as time now and it works just fine with me..plus, it beat taking the bumber off to clean it and the chance of hydrolocking is, well very slim..last time i had it on the wheel well with my bomex front on a rainy, down pouring, water everywhere..drove for 5mins..check the filter and it was ALL wet..luckily i had my SRI with me that day so i just switch out the cai for it..but man the filter were soaked..

anyway here's the pic..

u can't see the heatshield very well but it's there..like i said, cheapo camera..it'll do for now..did bbmod to it, no bogging watsoever..sounds good..the open ended part of the shield is facing down toward the underbody plastic panel..i also covered up the hole i cut on the sidewall for the cai routing onto the wheel well..used the "garage sale" sign with a few nuts and screws and it's all set..drove it again on a really bad rainy day and checked it afterward, and sure enough not a single drop of water anyway inside the engine bay..SRI/CAI is safe..

^^CAI is the way to go..if u got stock bumper..u got pretty good seal..water won't get in much..but if u got aftermarket, man u need to shield it up good.

:chuckles:

honestly, get a CAI if your going for performance

SRI if you want to "stay safe" for now

don't waste your $ just get a turbokit!

Lol. Jk.
depending on the weather you live in, I'd perfer CAI. But since when it rains here I got cross a small puddle ( back up storm drain) to get to work. I'm currently useing a K&N drop in :gap: .

Do you think its possible to do the same thing you did, with the auto-trans?

ihartmycelica
03-14-2007, 04:44 PM
i'm too lazy to read others responses so i may repeat someones
but CAI is better IMO

i've had both and i drive a lot
i only felt a little difference with the gains between the 2
buuuuuut i drive lo0ong distances
cuz i live in orange county during the week and san diego on the weekends and that's a 2 hours drive
when i had the short ram, i started to lose power after an hour or so because the filter began sucking in heat from under the hood
but when i had my cold air, i didn't lose power at all during the drive
and the car felt consistant the whole way

I have had both and I think I would go with a CAI. I felt a little better throttle responce with the CAI.

Do the Short Ram intakes have the same MAF sensor problems (bogging at low rpms mostly) that I've heard CAI's have without the BB mod?

d@vid
03-22-2007, 01:08 AM
I got the CAI and i have a bogging problem at the start but once i take the MAF and give it a little clean problem starts to solve.....

The only problem i got now is when i start the car up i just needs to let it run abit first otherwise it will get bogging.

If you are a manly man and can stand up to the rain, go with the Cold airt intake, ive had one for almost a year now with no problems. If its pouring outside, i just dont drive ;)

Get a CAI and cut your piping and have a connecter so is it is raining you can just take a section of the pipe out and make it a shortram. It would take a few minutes to do.
