View Full Version : what to make for a celica?

Say you had access to a lil metal shop at your school and knew how to weld, etc. With sheet metal, what would someone like to see made for a celica. I am totally lost for ideas, and have access here at school and know how to use the machinery. Only thing I can think of is those little switch plates that someone made before for the trash compartment in the console, something cool for the engine bay? any other ideas?

Cold air box. One for under the hood and one that can be bolted to the inside of the wheel well.

maybe a heat shield/radiator plate for the engine bay. my friend had one on his s2000...looked something kinda like this (yes i know that's a subaru)

so like a box that goes around the filter? where should air go in, anyone have pics to show for reference? BTW more than likely If I make something it would come painted in a rust preventing paint because there is no where for me to be chroming these. Also if something is to be done it will be as a one shot group.

radiator plate might be a lil hard now that i look at it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v734/mustanggtis4me/DSC04510.jpg
All the indentations on the celicas, etc, if it was just able to be a flat piece of metal with cuts such those shown above it would be a piece of cake to do.

why not make something for your own car since you have access to machine shop...Like a downpipe, wg dump, i dunno would seem more productive to me than a cooling plate...

engine parts are a no go, simple metal work such as welding sheets of metal and cutting are what my skills entail. I had to take a metal sculpture class last year so thats my learning.

Im not wanting to make a performance part because I am not a company who could take a law suit if someones car got ****ed up, lol.... perfect example see TPR Intakes
something like the rmm cover is not hard at all, but I would only be able to offer it in a color.

For the engine bay one, it could have a duct going to the small grill on the bumper and combine with a sort of cooling plate.
You might be able to fabricate a duct going to the large opening in the front bumper, but not sure if this would just suck in heated radiator air -- I know a lot of factory airboxs have plastic ductwork like that, and I've seen aftermarket "ram air" set ups for Mustangs that have ductwork like this was well.
For the fender, it would need to have brackets and enclose at least the bottom and sides of the filter. I suppose it could have a vented grill on the top most part, away from the ground. This would create a true cold air intake that would block off both heat from the engine side (heatsoak still occurs on a traditional CAI) and also make it next to impossible to hydrolock, even if the wheel well plastics are gone.
You'd have to make a mock up out of cardboard to get the measurements right, but this should be do-able, and would be a nice alternative to the traditional SRI or CAI set-up. Wrap the underhood one in cf, and you've got a show piece too.
If you build a protoype, we can test it's effectiveness by measuring air intake temps with my scantool. Ideally, you would want to build something that prevents heat soak but has as little restriction as an unshielded filter.

for the CAI box:
So pretty much a square box around the intakes filter with the top open for air to go into and mounting brackets

Yep. Maybe with a grill on top. It would proably be a good idea to wrap the box with aluminized heat reflective wrap too, but short of doing something clever with peltier cooling plates, that's as cold and protected from water as an intake is going to get.
BTW: For the cooling plate - duct work - engine bay box idea, note that the OEM plastic cooling plate could be flat, but the little ridges are actually small ducts that help vent cool air from the opening in the front grill to the factory airbox.
If you could duplicate that idea with a flat piece that would slide ino the narrow opening between the frame and the bumper (there is one, it's just concealed by the engine bay plastics), then you'd be able to direct cold air from the outside of the car to an underhood cold air box too.
I also like the under panel ideal -- make sure to include a little hinged door for oil changes ;)
The coilpack cover is a nice idea too :)

damn it i was talkin to my friend about goin on doing this with me. Its a no go guys, he got yelled at recently for goin in the workshop. They made some new BS rule that unless you are a freshman who is in the sculpture class or majoring in it, you cannot use the tools in there anymore..... *******s!

It's called "stainless steel" - looks silver for a very long time, no painting required!

its called if i made this it would be cheap metals to keep the cost down for both me and customer and so it would be painted. But it cant happen now because of new rules at the school.

hey all the links for the custom grill in the install section are dead, i did it before but it came out from our bitchin winters. So if anyone could point me in the direction of the link or just give me the measurements that would be awesome. i was also thinking about puting 2 grills in front of my fog lights, how much affect do you think that would have in the amount of light given off?
please no one will answer my thread

I don't know if this would do anything (good or bad), but you could make a shield for a sri (even though you don't have one) like hombre did except his was in cf.
I don't know...I'm just b.s.ing it.

If someone would get me some CAI intake temp data to look at first, I'll design one and have it built.
Not sure if it's better to habve one for under the hood or that would bracket to the wheelwell. I need more data... See further this thread (http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=237319).
So far, I've seen no evidence that a typical CAI performs any better than a well shielded SRI... this begs the question of whether it might be worth developing a heat/water shield for a CAI.
Someone with a CAI and scantool please share some data on idle heat soak, temp at cruise, etc. like in that thread PLEEEEEEASE. :(
