my Greddy charger's tensioner pulley gave way yesterday!! it somehow bent and the belt came off. have been pushing the car pretty hard lately though. Right before this happen, the belt gave out some squeking noise even at cruising. :(
Can I just get any pulley to replace it?
:( :( :(

do you mean the belt tensioner pulley or the supercharger pulley?
either way..I would avoid using any random pulley.

do you know what the PSI is for the stock pulley?
Barbarian

it's not the stock belt tensioner pulley and not the charger pulley. it's the tensioner pulley that comes with the greddy kit. it's located below the charger pulley. the other part of the pulley came off from the bearings. I have managed to push it back it it looks ok. will install it back and at the mean time try to get a replacement from Japan.

How did it come off - did the mounting bolt unscrew itself :shrugs:
You need loctite on the threads if it did - I thought that was in the instructions.
If the actual pulley came apart from its bearings, that suggests to me that you have a belt alignment problem.

the mounting bolt is fine.... the belt was pretty loose. and it was squeking before this happened. I guess it got misaligned as it was loose. the problem now is I don't know where to get replacement for this!!

Hey barb have you tried calling the tuner that you bought it from? Maybe they can help.

black..... I did but they insist I drive my car to them.... :( don't think I wanna do that as that will mean driving 3-4 hours with my injured car.......... anyway....saw your car at Mutiara last week..... how's your charger doing?

so far ok bro. Just wacked it for 2 days before realising that the car needs major tuning. Running too rich, bogging. Just got the password fromm Japan so would be going to trial for some tuning 2morrow. Well bro as for your issue guess you would have to drive it down but don't worry they are nice chaps. I'm thinking we should not use the smaller charger belt maybe because of the weather. Read somewhere in SC FAQ that the belt must not be too tight and provide some allowance for slippage.

For the pulley to break, I would have thought that there must have to be some axial loading - i.e. along the direction of the pulley's bolt. Is the supercharger aligned with all the other pulleys properly?

they look well aligned. problem only started after I have belt slipping issue.....
Black, my belt is too loose. didn't have to depress the belt tensioner much to put in the belt. You sure about the slippage part???

It sounds like there is something seriously wrong here - it should take a very large amount of force - my entire weight on a 12" socket wrench - to shift the tensioner enough to get the belt on.
What size belt are you using? - it should be 2475mm, I think.
I would urgently inspect your alternator mounting brackets - have you had any nasty unexplained rattles recently? :shrugs:

brackets look ok.... no rattle also.... gonna get my car later today but still using the old pulley....

yes bro,
As far as my research goes (correct me if i'm wrong), the charger needs to have a little allowance for slippage. When mine was installed last week it was also slightly loose not much (just nice). Especially the temp in Malaysia is humid close to 40C nowadays.

so you did street tuning at Trial already? don't intend to put it on a dyno?

Hi bro,
Tuning done only 50-60%. We just played with the fueling as i just want the car to be safe and driveable and without knocking. The full tuning with ignition and all would anly be done once i obtained the V-manage come April as this process would take a long time as we need to factor in the vvt and all. So bro my dyno would be much later la. Anyway whats the story on the pulley?
Cheers

thanks black.
was free today so went to the workshop and dismantled my charger. guess whatl.... the alternator bracket fractured and my alternator couldmove in any direction. I'm guessing this is the reason my pulley gave way. I also found that the pulley and it's bearing don't have any c clip on. is this normal?
Black. you should reinforce your alternator bracket before it gives way.

Thanks for the advise barb, will look into strengtening it next week. How were you driving the car for the past few days?

well.... my mechanic pumped the bearing back into the pulley..... have not been pushing the car......

my pulleys were misaligned! took out the charger and realign it back. customed made a tensioner pulley with clips for the bearing. while we were at it, had the internal surface of the intake manifold and the rest of the Greddy stuff polished off. It was pretty rough. I'm surprised Greddy din do a better job.

Hi bro,
Still no news from Greddy. Don't know if they have the parts. Lucky thing you are able to customoze it. Where did you do it. At least i know that I can get it done locally if any thing happens (knock on wood). Cheers

guys, issit the same guy who is trying to sell some C2 kits on Singapore Celica forums? Anyway be careful of the alternator, had to fabricate an extra bracket to hold it in place as its movement caused squeaking as it caused the belt to misalign
Barbarian

I'm not sure who's trying to sell you guys the C2 kit but my contact claims he can get it for RM6k only. Sounds like a scam to me......
my alternator bracket just fractured at the lower weak point.... :(

Is that the cheap and nasty bent steel one, or the expensive milled aluminium bar one?

If you look carefully at that photo, there are grub-screws in the 'dimples' - I imagine they are there to lock the bearing into place.

here's another car I replaced the pulley.. notice how this one was slowly coming out..
The grease maybe coming from the bearing not 100% sure..

Is this a common problem with most SC applications? How many miles did u get on her before it started to pull out?
