View Full Version : A few simple questions about wiring...

I've had two gauges installed (A/F and Volt) for a while now and they work perfectly fine. They are grounded, connected to the cig lighter to turn on fully when the car starts and are powered directly from the battery.
However, since they receive direct power from the battery, they stay on even when the car's turned off.

Recently, I've decided to rewire the direct power to these gauges to another 12V power source so that they only turn on when the key is turned to ON.

I know I could use the clock or the ignition, except I'm not sure which are the wires that I need to splice into. Can anybody help me with this?

For ignition, which ones are power wires in these pics:

For the clock, I didn't find any pics, but could someone tell me the color of its main power wire?

Finally, are there any possible problems I may encounter if I rewire them to either of these wires?
The gauges don't have any relays or fuses since they draw so little current, but I'd always prefer to be safe than sorry. Any chance these would put too much stress on the ignition, the starter or the clock wiring?

Responding via PM... best source for ignition is from a fuse off the IG1 relay... or add an additional external relay as an AUX ign relay. You won't be underneath the steering column.

I'd avoid messing w/the clock.

Alright. So how do I do that? I can splice wires but I'm not too familiar with the location of all the electrical components in the Celica.
What extra materials do I need and how do I assemble everything? Any photos would be great.

Patience, mon ami... I work for a living still...lol. I'll look up all your requested info & let ya know.

For a +12V ignition source for your halos & gauges, use a fuse tap like this:
http://www.anythinggps.com/ProductImages/installations/Fuse.Tap2.jpg
and install it into any of these fuse positions in the center console fusebox:
10 HTR
25A WIPER
15A WASHER
15A RR WIPER
add an external fuse to the pigtail for safety... sized appropriately... but I can't imagine you'd need anything much larger than 5A (it depends which way you install the tap as to whether you're before or after the fuse in the socket).

For your fog's (Ominious knows)... to operate off the HL's... you want to do the same thing, but with either the 10A HEAD LH LWR or 10A HEAD RH LWR fuses in the large fusebox under the hood.. (check for closing clearance on the cover 1st). Either of these fuses goes to +12V when the HLs turn on (but, not DRLs). You'll only need a 1A or so external fuse for this. The fog relay you're operating doesn't pull much current.

& that's an ugly splice job in the 2nd pic... (never rely on electrical tape).... and, to answer your other question, the GRAY wire comes from a 7.5A fuse that is in the ACCY (accessory) key position.

Thank you very much 2way. You're a wealth of electrical-related info.

I'll let you know how it goes.

P.S.: by the way, that's not my splice job. I got those pics from this thread:

You're more than welcome...

now turn off the cold breeze coming my way... LOL...
& expect the Bruins to win the next game, too.... ;)

I'll look for ya when I'm in Montreal in June.

Sure thing, shoot me a PM anytime. We'll go for a beer.

And yeah, even I, a full-fledged Canadian, can't wait for this cold weather to stop.

As for the Montreal Canadians, I've lost faith in them ever since the All-Star games. So... go... ummm... Ottawa/Vancouver... eh? :chuckles:

Only 1? :wtf: LOL
I'll try & remember to get contact info before I go. I haven't been impressed w/Montreal.... trying to find a really good dinner there just hasn't been successful.

The Bruins/Habs game on the 22nd ought to be a little crowd interesting... it is being followed by:
The Wreckers Post-Game Concert: Following the Bruins/Canadiens game, The Wreckers will perform a post-game concert presented by WKLB Country 102.5! On the heels of their debut album, "Stand Still, Look Pretty," The Wreckers will make the Garden ice their stage. Fronted by Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp, The Wreckers blend of country and pop with heartfelt harmonies earned them a Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
