I've been thinking of buying a 350Z and working with that instead of my 00 Celica GT. I find that it's going to be too much work and too much money and I won't be getting the performance that I could with a 350. What to do, what to do. What are your takes on customizing a Z?

just get a used evoVIII and modify it. You will be faster and the money per hp will be better.

Why so? It's semi-true.

*Waits for Neological to come in and tell you too look at his sig followed by the question: Would you want to buy a car that does this every weekend?*
Most Evos are driven by ricers who have money, and are abused to hell before they trade them in.

Get the 350z, better platform all around.
DO NOT BUY A USED EVO
Like everyone says, its a ticking time bomb - its like grabbing a grenade with the pin already pulled - STUPID STUPID STUPID
350z is a fine platform - its cheap, but it does nothing to arise passion in me - its honestly a boring car to look at, sit in, and pretty boring to drive - the power hits and then its just flat, no drama :o: -yawn-
That said its a clear upgrade from a GT
don't get an auto
bolt-on mods to a Z are worthless - the car is well tuned from the factory - turbocharge/supercharge it or go home
suspension mods are worthwhile, as are tire upgrades

I guess with the EVO as long you get a certified used one and make sure to have the 100K mile powertrain warranty and...you are prepared for downtime if you car is in and out of shop, you should be fine.
I luv the shape and look of the Z's. I use to drive an 87'. But...with the Z your only going to be able to bolt on a exhaust, headers, and a plenum spacer, I hear it doesn't respond to intakes well (2 of my friends have G 35's). If you want more power out of it you will HAVE to go F/I. The Z only put's down 220 to the ground on dyno pulls.
I'm kinda in the same postion as you since I have a GT and I'm looking to go faster once I re-enlist and pay the GT off.
Right now I'm leaning toward a C5 Corvette Z06. 405HP and they're going for around 23K-25K. I'm also considering a 07' GTO 400HP. Not really a fan of the way it looks (Very large angry Grand-AM) but they're going for around 20K with LOW miles. Pretty nice interior. I luv the current M3 but I hoping they go down in price (used) once the new M3 drops.
I figure what's most important to me in owning a car right now?
Reliable constant power, Price, Handling, Looks.
I WANT a Supra but they just seem to never come down in price, even used. Seems like you can't touch an unmolested one for under 33K.
Do yourself a favor and go test drive a Z, then a GTO, and then a C5 Vette.
No replacement of displacement.
Look @ what you would spend on MOD's and what you'd pay for a car and what's going to be the fastest after the MOD's.
You can easily get 450HP out a Z06 w/ I/H/E and cam Vs. larger intercooler, cams, down pipe, exhaust, ECU reflash or piggyback, larger turbo on a EVO.
I've been hooked on the vette ever since I drove my buddies triple black Z06 on HRE's.
Plus you'll fit right with the rest of the officers once you get your commision. :chuckles: (You know exactly what I'm talking about) 2 of my Commanders, a Lt, and 2 CAPT's all drive Vette's here @ Tyndall.
I'd like a triple black Z06 lowered, black power coated 07' Z06 rims, the FL specialtly AF licsense plate with "stealth" or "SR 71" printed on it, LOL.

jesus christ that thing is gaudy and hideous - this is what happens when people have more money than taste.
As far as what TRD said, yeah, the Z06 is a monster, if you can tolerate the interior and cheap build quality (which I simply cannot).
You'd be really surprised how far E46 M3s are coming down, even now. Also consider, you can get an NSX for as low as $25,000, or a 3.2L 290 hp version for as low as $35,000 - if i were going to keep it stock or do bolt ons I'd get the 3.2L, but you could save $10,000 by getting the 3.0L and supercharge/twin turbocharge it for around $8000 and you'd have a real beast.

F-U marc... you are still all on my case since last time there was a Z thread. Fact is my Z is one of the top on on my350z and its a true JDM Z on all parts.
So IMO and many others, you have either no taste or no money.
to each their own i guess...

Beautiful. I caught a black/white two-tone painted 240z in a wallgreens parking lot once... Hard not to love... Except for the zebra-print seat covers. Eh...

There's a better chance the M3 was owned by some yuppie fvck who never took it over 80 and rubbed it with a diaper every sunday. x2 if it's a convertible.
If you buy a used Evo be sure to save 2k to replace the clutch immediately. I pity the person who ends up buying my car after I'm done with it.

JDM = I'm a retard and I paid more for parts that mean something only to the smallest, most retarded segment of the population - Ricers.
Who are you trying to impress pal? Cuz it ain't us. I guess you got lots of "street cred" on the mean streets of Tucson.
Of course if you came to the East Coast you'd get your ass handed to you (in a straight line and on the turns) by stock looking Civics and unassuming F-bodies.

True, but the S54 failure is largely attributed to it's faulty design/quality control and has very little correlation with the way it's driven. A 4G engine is much cheaper and easier to repair/replace than a $15k S54 with a hole in it.
Why would replacing the clutch immediately save $2k?

I think he meant saving 2k to have the clutch replaced immediately cuz it's gonna blow.
