I thinking about getting a buffer to wax my car because it takes forever if I do it by hand.
My question: Does this ruin the paint???

Not if you get a good one and use it properly.

I have a DeWalt Buffer...not for the weak...the key to good buffing is to be gentle. Another thing to be aware of is to start with a new, clean wool or terri buffing cloth.

You may find the machine itself cheaper elsewhere, but their pads are great for whatever kind of polish/wax you use. Worth the $12.
I would recommend a high speed buffer & a waffle type pad. "sheepskin" type pads leave swirls & are better for cutting very rough areas using an abrasive type polish like a 1500.
A waffle pad will not swirl & leaves a deeper gloss. High speed is not for an amateur though. Orbital buffers suck.
