I was just wondering what octane of gas to use when spraying. I was told that using high octane is bad for the engine when not using any nitrous. If Im going to use the nitrous when at any street race do I first have to make sure my gas is almost empty and then fill up enough high octane to race and then when Im done fill the rest with 87 or what? Any info will help. Im using a 50 shot of NX.

Thanks A Lot,
Alan

high octane is not bad for your engine.. your car just gets used to it from what i was told.. if you go from using 93 all the time to 87 once youll experience some knocking... anyhow on nitrous id suggest 93 octane or higher

Hey moistio,

Just a fellow GT owner wondering how much power you feel with the nitrous? :D

If they have a GT why would they experience knocking when going from 93 to 87?

you recommend 93 larry? Over in my area all i can find is 91. Any suggestions (what station to go to?) or is the 91 ok but not bulletproof?

91 is fine. We have 92 and 93 here. my buddy uses it in his camaro and he has a 150 shot.

i recommend as high as you can get.. 94 is you can find it, but 91 should be fine

SilverNico,

So far I've only used the 35 shot and it Pulls:burnout: It's soooo sweet. Im just waiting to use up my full tank of 87 so I can try out the 50 shot. Ill post up how it is when I use it. :chuckles:

I reccomend Chevron supreme. Techron is NOT just a marketing stunt, and they have a couple of pantented refining processes that work pretty well.

The 1ZZ doesn't have knock sensors. Using 91 or high octane (more resistant to knocking, burns slower, yada yada yada), because it burns slower, based in the timing map of of 87 octane, there won't be nearly as a complete burning of the air-fuel mixture. The mixture coats the cylinder walls and pistons tops, eventually reduces to carbon and builds up.

Despite having a Electronic Spark Advancement (ESA) program, nothing will tell it is running a 91 or above octane. The ESA system only advances the timing slightly, withing the anti-knocking capabilites of 87 octane.

Over time the carbon buildup will alter the geometry of the combustion chamber, increasing the compression, to the point where using 93 octane or higher will prevent knocking.

Im sorry I dont really understand... so do I use 91 or higher or can I use 87

87 is fine for your everyday normal driving. When squeezing the bottle everything I've read says that a higher octane is better. I'm not an expert on the use of nitrous so you should ask the manufacturer of your system what their recommendation is.

Very little of what you just said made any sense to me.

he is saying that since the 1zz doesnt have a knock sensor the car wont really retard the timing due to the lack of octane rating.. meaning 87 and nitrous would be fine as the ECU wouldnt pull the timing, BUT on that note, even though this is feasible, its still safer to run higher octane gas to prevent detonation

That was an interesting interpretation. :chuckles:

arent those the diagrams for the 2zz though not the 1zz?

According to Griffin the GT has the knock sensor as well. I'm certainly not an expert but if the only way the timing can be adjusted is via the ECU then it MUST be capable of seeing a detonation problem. IMHO Maybe the more pertinent question is how did you and VZV21 know the GT had no knock sensor?

i was just going on his word.. I didnt know for myself, I was answering a question based on the information presented to me :) in this case I guess im wrong

No problem, just trying to make sure we have the right information. If I have some free time tomorrow maybe I'll stop by my Toyota dealer and talk to service about it.

the easiest thing to do would be look into the service manual in the index for knock sensor, im sure youd see it if the car has one and I believe thats what theyve already done in the Tech Info forum.. not sure why VZV21 thinks otherwise
