the engine and styling ques. earlier model has the 2.0l 9000rpm motor. later has the 2.2l and i'm not sure of the redline....

the AP2s also has better suspension geometry than the AP1s.
I wouldn't say the AP1s had problems, its just Honda decided to make the S2000 more practical to drive around town. the new F22C has about 10ft/lb more torque then the F20C, making it a little more easier to drive through the city without revving too much to get places, though its redline has been drop to 7800rpm. i've heard, even though the new S2000 has a lower redline, its practically the same in 1/4 mile times.
the only problem i saw was the rear plastic window. i hate plastic windows... they yellow out so damn quickly.

close

Sometime in 2004 I believe they went to a glass rear window
I also believe they went with the 2.2L engine that redlines at 8000 rpm, makes 20 more lb-ft of torque, and is rated the same horsepower - however, dynos show it makes more than the old 2.0L and while the 0-60s are quiet similar the 2.2L can pop out a 13.8 1/4 mile while the 2.0L struggled to hit a 14 flat and usually put out a 14.2

And as for the suspension, its not necessarily better on the AP2 - it had the oversteer tuned out of it so it was more tolerable on the street

the 06+ also came with traction control, drive by wire, and can be modified with Hondata which really broadens the midrange by lowering VTEC engagement based on throttle position

Yes, LSD is stock on both the AP1 and AP2. For a better read, if you're looking to buy, read here. Very long read, have fun.

04 is the year to get. No improvements since 04, they added a bunch of crap like DBW, etc and weight, but nothing we would want.

I've heard that the earlier models had problems with like the steering rack and stuff. is that true?

Really depends on what the person wants fromt the car. Is this a weekend fun car or a dedicated track car? As the rumors have it the CR version won't have AC. Then again the details remains to be rumors until shown at the upcoming NY auto show.

from what I've heard the CR is not a car you're going to want to drive around on the street, like the 996 GT3, first generation ITR, or Evo RS

No one buys the S2000 as their main car anyways, at least no sane individual. The CR should be tolerable for a weekend cruise.

And what do you do when its hot and muggy and raining ?

I chose my Z4 over the S2000 because there was such a disparity in cruising comfort and highway performance between the two cars - the base S2000 alone is a tolerable city car and a great weekend warrior - I can't imagine the CR being anything other than a dedicated track car you can tolerate driving on your way to and from races.
