I was rear ended a few weeks ago which damages incurred totaled to about $2200. The person at fault, his insurance quoted me for the damages and cut me a check for $2200 made payable to me.
Now, I'm deciding whether or not to put some of that money towards a new clutch/flywheel package and anything else that my tranny may need repaired, plus little engine work like tune up, belt change, just normal maintenance. I figured I could increase the longetivity of my car by replacing the parts in my tranny since it does have 107K and I'd like to keep the car for another five years. But then again I'll be riding around with a rear bumper that's smashed in on one corner and not being able to access my tailgate because the latch is embedded into the tailgate.
What would you guys suggest I do in this case scenario being that I have access to the money finally to repair the parts in my tranny? Any questions, comments, or concerns are accepted.
Regards,
Hector

i think you should just repair the celica's rear end. not only is it an eye sore, but it might rust. unless your clutch is slipping and engine has problems, i wouldn't put money into something that isn't ready to be replaced. "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I would love to get my rear and lift gate repaired because it is an eye sore, but then again my clutch is starting to show signs of slippage. First gear will chatter when first engaging (could be the throw out bearing). Some shifts are rough where i have to force the clutch in (not sure if the linkage might need grease), 5-4 down shift will grind unless I rev match. Then I need to do regular maintenance stuff which isn't that big of a deal. Though I can't complain because I've never had any problems with this car and I've reach the 100k mark, now at 107k. I just don't want to regret not being able to repair what is needed when I had the money to do the repairs. Still contemplating. Any other ideas?

its hard bc you have to choose between 2 things that need to get replaced..just pick what is most urgent. there is alot of part outs around here so i think its highly possible to find a replacement rear for cheap. as long as your car isnt all flashy and your not out tryin to race people i would get the flywheel/clutch done so you can drive the car at least. it would suck to get your rear back to normal and then find out you cant go anywhere bc you cant get the car out the driveway.

It's give or take, either way you go you might regret. Fix rear and later regret not fixing tranny, fix tranny and you might later regret not having rear fixed. If it was me I would see if the rear can be fixed cheaper and start putting down some money for when the tranny goes.

you should be able to find a shop to fix the damage for less than 2200...insurance quotes in my experiance are usually higher than you accually have to pay. Get quotes and shop around, fix the rear and you might be well on your way to a new clutch and tune-up with the remainder.

Any other ideas?Sounds more like you either have air in the clutch system, your master or slave cylinder is dying, or your gears are just worn down too far. If it was a clutch problem, it would be slipping under hard acceleration, especially after shifts. Hydraulic system problems would cause hard shifting.

And if you can find the parts yourself, you prevent markup on the parts that the bodyshop will charge you.

Sounds like you're pretty knowledgeable judging by the responses to my car's symptoms. How can I troubleshoot my car in order to find out whether any of these symptons may be a cause to the problems I'm having? I'd really be frustrated if I had done tranny work to find out that I'm still having the same problems. Thanks for the help!

To test if it's your clutch slipping, put the car in the highest gear from a stop and slowly let the clutch out. If the car stalls, your clutch is fine. If it keeps running, then your clutch is done.
You can also bleed your clutch at the slave cylinder on the front of the transmission. Remember to fill the reservoir (shared with the brake fluid) or you might run low and suck more air in. If one of the cylinders is going bad, it might be hard to bleed the system. I know on my MR2 it wouldn't bleed at all because the system couldn't build any pressure.
