Inside the intake air cleaner lid there is a flap operated by means of a vacuum. With the engine not running this flap is open. When running it is closed. Does anyone know what it is called and it's purpose please. It obviously restricts the passage of air into the air cleaner and hence into the engine and may be a choke. It can be viewed by squinting through the opening in the front of the air cleaner.
The car is not as economical as I expected and wondered whether this has any effect on it.
Thanks

This part has been covered extensively. Do a search for 'butterfly valve' and you'll find all you need to know. It essentially regulates air flow: restricting at lower RPMs for better torque and opening at higher RPMs for more horsepower.

The car is not as economical as I expected Huh?

If that's the case... I doubt the butterfly will change it... & removing it might even make it worse....

The reason I say it is not as economical as I expected is because I have a Toyota Avensis with exactly the same engine, but not as highly tuned obviously which returns 40+ MPG out if town, whereas the Celica, which is lighter by several hundred pounds returns between 32 &35 MPH depending upon how fast it is driven.

Thanks for the US conversion... if that is US MPG... you are right where you should be. The Avensis has a variety of engine options... if yours has the 1.6L, you have to compare that to the high-comp 2ZZ-GE...

Sorry I am quoting Imperial gallons sold in the UK.
If you are interested:
US gallon = 3.785 litres
Imperial gallon = 4.54 gallons.
We get more juice per gallon but it costs a heck of a lot more. (the equivalent of about $2 a gallon).
The Avensis actually has a 1.8 VVT engine which is mechanically the same as the ZZ1 (140bhp) engine, but not as many horses, but quite a bit heavier than the Celica.

Correction price equivalent is $8 per Imperial gallon.

Toyota also made efficiency revisions to the newer engines... including having the VVT effect the exhaust, as well as the intake... vs. the Celica's intake only...

only...?
I suppose the only way to find out is to suck it and see.

Yes... the VVT only effects the intake cam timing on the Celica. On the newer Toyota motors the VVT effects both the intake & exhaust timing.

That comes out to $1.76 a gallon! I wish I was paying that!!!

I think he meant Imperial Gallon = 4.54 liters; 1 Imperial Gallon = 1.2 U.S. Gallons. So he's paying ~$6.67 a U.S. gallon.

1 gal UK = 1.20095 gal US
1 gal US = 0.8326738 gal UK
I think what he meant was that 1 gal UK = 4.546092 Liters
32-35 mpg UK would equal 26-29mpg... depending on driving style city vs. highway... that could be a little on the low side.

Absolutely right
One Imperial Gallon - 4.54 litres. We buy out petol is litres now and the current cost is around the 90 pence per litre. Currently 2 dollars = 1 pound Stirling.
You have it easy. That is why a reasonably economical car is quite important.
