I am looking at a used, six speed 2001 gts with 13000 miles on it. The dealer wants to charge me an extra $500 to make the vehicle a certifed vehicle. He says rignt now, it is not yet certified because they just got it in.
This extends the powertrain warranty from 5years/60000 miles to 6 years/100000 miles.
Is this worth it for $500? Does anyone know what it acually costs to "certify" a vehicle?
Hearing all the stories about damaged trasmissions and engines from mis-shifting makes me think the warrnty is important.

I think it is probably worth it, I wouldn't pay without trying to negotiate him down on it first though. Of course all of this depends on how decent the price is to begin with. :)

Do it, no question about it. For 500 bux. You'd be crazy to pass that up. In one tranny tear down you are out 500 bux. I guarantee you aren't going to be doing some of the more rigourous stuff yourself to this car.
Do it, adn you will thank yourself later on.

if you compare a 5yr/60k with a 6yr/100k warranty it looks like a good deal for 500 but if you think about it the difference between the two is 1yr/40k unless you drive 40k in one year the only benefit you are getting is one additional year plus probably about 12000 more miles for the average driver, but if you do go with it extended warraanties are always negotiable.

It costs the dealership $400 to make a car certified, so they are making $100 from you, tell them you want to pay the actual cost $400, but still $500 for that kind of warranty is still worth it.

<----- Would have paid over $13,000 in repairs if has car was not under warranty.

Mine was certified already. It's funny that my used warranty was better than my new warranty. :D
