View Full Version : Lotus + Greddy S/C + 10 lb Pulley = 248 WHP!

I was lurking over at www.elisetalk.com and I found their tripoint supercharger thread...which is basically our greddy s/c for double the price :thumbdown :
http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26597
What caught my eye is that the member who was "testing" out the charger made 248 whp through a 10 psi pulley, the Xede piggy back ECU (or reflash...I forgot), and (I'm assuming) better breather mods:
http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26597&page=12
http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=45476&stc=1&d=1168223245
Now if a GTS was given the best breather mods possible, could it hit 250 whp with a 10 psi pulley too? A superb deal for a greddy s/c setup may fall in my lap soon, and it may also speed up the time it will take me amp up the setup more aggressively (AEM CAI/Boosted 2.0 Ported Header/TRD Exhaust/Emanage to Injen CAI/Redliner Race Header/RSR Catback Exhaust/PFC).
MWR already hit 235 whp on a AEM CAI/Trial Header/Exhaust/PFC combo, so could 15 whp be eeked out of a Injen CAI, Redliner Race Header (if it goes to production), and a Catback/2.5" strait pipe exhaust? I may roll around with the more tamer & police friendly 220+ whp setup...but I may also want to get more power down the road  .

every dyno is different, that dyno might read high, the only way to see true gains were if there were baseline numbers done on that same dyno.

Here are some comparison dyno graphs from what seems to be from some random other member with a tripoint supercharger too:
http://www.drjanestewart.com/darksol/comparisonhp.gif
http://www.drjanestewart.com/darksol/comparisontorque.gif
The numbers are pretty much similar. Would the 190 base hp ECU, or the midship exhaust gas route have anything to do with the extra power over us???

wow nice numbers. nice smooth climb with that s/c.

:werd:
Still, that number is very believeable on a dynojet for 10 psi. I'm putting down ~213 whp with 11 psi on the Greddy kit, so figure another 20-25 or so with my set-up on an MT, which would be in that ballpark.
Also, I think XAT's Racing's dynojet reads a bit on the low side -- I've got data from 4 different lightly modded 6-speeds and none of them are breaking 160 whp on XAT's dyno.

Really? I thought Tripoint just jacked up the price for you guys. :shrugs: My mistake.
Dyno tuning and the install couldn't cost more than $1,000 to $1,500 so that overall price still seems a bit high for a MP62 charger install though...but then again Lotus vs. Toyota is always going to be apples vs. oranges as far as price range goes.

so what other mods did that car have beside the charger kit

we've seen 240 hp and 165 wtq out of the trial supercharger kit on gnes100's car, and that was only at 5psi in lift.
Elise guys are kinda limited in tuning options.
However the dyno's posted correlate with all the supercharger info i've seen, It just keeps going up!
I'd really like to see someone with a good race header and catless exhaust + pfc AND mwr springs do a pull to 9k. I'm willing to be power still doesn't drop off.

x2. But the Trial s/c is basically the Blitz s/c, not the Greddy MP62 s/c.
If I luck out and get to swap my stock parts for another member's greddy s/c setup, my stage II build will consist of Injen CAI, redliner's race header (if he produces it), RS*R Exhaust w/ 2.5" midpipe or 2.5" strait pipe exhaust, PFC, MWR valves & springs, rod bearings, main bearings (if necessary), oil pump gear, fuel rail, and I guess a walbro fuel pump to avoid max duty cycle on the injectors for a high revving 9K fuel cut s/c setup :D .

Isn't that a bit of a scary output for stock internals?
According to this : http://www.magnusonproducts.com/mp62.htm the charger is using about 30-35HP to produce 10psi at a decent flow rate, so if he's got 250ish at the wheels, he'd need 300+ at the crank...
Also, according to the Delta-T graph, his intake air will be at 180F above ambient - which is also going to be toasty warm...

You know... I hadn't thought about that. I'm planning on going up to ~13 psi :hide:

Could you please post a pic of your higher speed pulleys - I'd be interested in seeing what they look like compared to the original?
Have you worked out what RPM the blower would be doing at 13psi - and what air flow you need for your desired power output? The old rule of thumb is about 1.5 cfm/HP - so I would have thought that you might need a bigger blower soon!

A good Elise exhaust will be far less restrictive than a Celica exhaust.

Yes. The plan is for a 2.95" pulley (currently 3.125").
Assuming that the crank is 5.25" (can someone confirm that this is correct?) it was just below 16K at 9K RPMs, so it's about as close as you can get to the max without killing the blower outright. I may play it cautious and go for a 2.97" pulley, which will give me a slightly wider margin on the blower speed.
Trust me, I would not be attempting this if I didn't have the water injection. Still, I had forgotten about the hp lost to turning the blower...

I'm running a 2.85 blower pulley giving me 13.3psi after the intercooler.... Intercooler and manifold create a 2psi. drop.......Almost at the end of safe blower speeds...so I think I'll stop now and work on the tune a bit more........290+rwhp Lotus Exige......PS you will need an intercooler or a garden hose if you go over 10psi.....

Ah, okay. based on your 15+ psi before the drop, with 2.95" I should be right around 14 psi as predicted. Perfect :D

Does it have a long conical section on the back like the Greddy original, or do you use a spacer to get the correct offset? :shrugs:

Yes it does -- no spacer needed. I have another pic somewhere in my gallery... right now that pulley is off waiting to be recut to the new 2.95" size :D

Hmmm... I don't know man -- I think if I were to start swapping S/C's, I'd try the rotrex, unless of course going to the MP90 would be a "simple" bolt-on affair :)

If you could fit an MP90, I would suspect that you would simply need a spacer between your Greddy manifold and the new charger and another between the charger's intake port and that intake casting.
TBH though, I really think that if you max out your MP62, you really should be beefing up your engine internals, and if you have to get your engine out, you might as well go to town and plumb in an intercooler, extra oil coolers etc :)

I just lurked over on www.moremonkey.com and found this Tri-point supercharger thread: http://www.monkeytuner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=329
The Supercharger Kit for the 2005 sells for $4500.00
The Supercharger Kit for the 2006 sells for $4750.00
That member may have gotten a deal, but these prices are what I remembered the Tripoint S/C to cost. Greddy s/c are now at around $2,800. At one point, it was on sale on a website for $2,500 before going back up to $2,800. I knew I wasn't that off.
Edit: I'm adding a pic just to prove my point, it was right from the guy's engine bay as a "teaser pic":
