View Full Version : I'm having a weird problem with my 1st gear.

Whenever I first drive my car in the morning or whenever after it's been sitting all day or night it doesn't want to move. When I put it in first gear and let out the clutch and press on the throttle, the car barely creeps foward, then it feels like it breaks free from something and then it's fine. It only happens in 1st, no other gear, including reverse. I park on a inclined driveway, reverse out fine with no problem, and put it in 1st to start going and it feels like it's stuck, the revs don't shoot up as if the clutch is slipping or anything. It goes into gear fine without any grinding. It's just weird, it does this for a few seconds and then it's back to normal. This just recently started happenning when the whether started to warm up. Any ideas?

Do you have an intake? My car used to do the same thing until I put my stock airbox back in.

Yo mine does the same thing. It's never caused any problems, just kinda annoying when it bogs pulling out of parking lots and driveways. It seems that after you give the engine a good rev that it goes away and doesn't come back till you start the car again later. Perhaps it's that our idle is meant for the stock airbox rather than aftermarket intakes and once the engine has been revved the air flow gets going. Eh who knows. :)

I've had the blitz intake for almost a year and this just now started happening.

How many miles do you have? ~30k
Me and a friend both started having this problem right around 30k miles. Eventually we both got check engine lights. My car goes in to the dealership tomorrow to see whats wrong.

I have 38k miles. I'm wondering if the throttle valve is getting stuck some how.

I'm having that same problem too. But mine is an auto GTS.

Let the car warm up for a good full min or so and then try it...

Does it only happen the first time you try to go forward? If so, are you using your parking brake? Maybe it's sticking..

If the E-Brake was sticking it would happen in reverse as well, which it evidently doesnt....sounds odd imo.

wow look who's back on the other side OT...
you can check to see if its the throttle valve by playing with it under the hood while the car is in neutral and running
other than that you may have a disconnect in one of the hoses attached to the intake somewhere.
also does the problem occur when you start in the morning only or whenever you start?

usually in the morning, after it's been sitting for hours and hours. It hasn't happened since I posted this *knock on wood*
But now I'm having a new problem, I'm getting a really bad vibration when I slow down. 20mph and below. The wheels aren't unbalanced, because they don't vibrate at 70mph. I just rotated my tires on Monday and the problem started after that. 3 of the tires are 1 year old and 1 tire is about 6 months old, I had to replace a tire awhile back. After the rotation, the newest tire is now in the front for the first time since I've had it. The newest tire is on the front right side, it seems that is where the vibration is coming from, but it's hard to pin point. I'm guessing that since that tire is newer that it has more tread so it's larger than the other front tire so that unbalance is causing a vibration due to my stiff Tein suspension. Either that or the tire pressures are uneven (I forgot to check Monday, I'll check today) or something is dangerously loose. Any other ideas?

all the things you mentioned you should check for... plus check to make sure that the wheel is sitting flush on the hub.. sometimes if you dont thread the lug nuts right it leaves some space between the wheel and the hub under one of the lug nuts.

The wheel is probably unbalanced. Being unbalanced can cause problems at varying speeds, it does not have to be at higher speed. You would not notice it on the rear but it becomes obvious when rotated to the front.

I always thought 70mph had something to do with harmonics and an unbalanced wheel would vibrate at that speed. I guess I'll check for missing weights too when I get home. I just hope my wheel doesn't fall off while driving home.

The 70 MPH thing would be a new one to me??? Checking the weights will not tell you anything it will need to be put on a dynamic balancer to see if there is a problem or not.

I was just saying I'll check to see if a weight is missing, there should be a spot in the shape of a weight if one fell off, so I'd know for sure that I need to get them balanced again.

uh, no..........you said you had a new tire put on so there is a good chance that there will be marks left from where the old tire was balanced. Even if there were no marks it does not mean that it wasn't incorrectly balanced the first time. Unfortunately with all the tires I've seen come and go it does happen.

So I'll look for the newest marks. Stop being so insensitive, you're hurting my feelings. :thumbdown

Go and look for all the marks your little heart desires.

tire pressure = fine
lug nuts = fine
looks like oldster is right, I hate that.

the lag in the morning is common with an intake...........
just let it warm up a bit longer

You could have told me that earlier and I could have just lied to you. Now that I know I won't make the same mistake again. :)

Fife, I actually teared up, thank you so much for those kind words. :)
PS - Don't forget to take the tire back to the guys who mounted it and have them do it again at no charge.
