ok Im putting ccfl's in the footwells but want it to light up when door is open and for me to turn on off when ever I want found some threads but dont understand them...

1) would i need a relay? how to wire it?
2)where are the dam dome wires to tap into I cant find them near the use box..
3)what switch do I need? on-off-on switch?

thanks

Dome light relay is behind the kick panel on the driver side....
Wires goes from there up the pillar to the dome light....

ok found the wires its red/white and blue/white

red= ground
blue=power

right?

1) Mount the ccfl whereever I want.

2) Install switch wherever I want it.

3) Run the wires from the passenger side to the driver side.

4) Join the wires together so I only have to deal with one positive and one negative.

5) Run the negative wire to dome ground (red/white wire)

6) Run the positive wire from the ccfl to the switch

7) Run a wire from the switch to dome power source

would this work for it to light up when door is open and for me to turn on off when ever I want?

Could do what I did:
a) +12v wire goes to a constant source of power (forget what I used, I think it was the cigarette lighter)
b) ground (negative) wire goes to the green/white (I think? not sure on the colour) that is connected to the door switch. I popped off the door sill and the plastic beside the seat to access the wire. Did this on either side.

Or if you wanted to use a relay, connect one side of the coil to the cigarette lighter, and the other side to the door switch. Then connect one side of the relay's switch to an always-on power source, such as the cigarette lighter, connect the other side of the relay's switch to the inverter's +12v wire, and connect the black wire, ground, to any black wire. Youll need to do this for both sides if you want them to turn on separately.

Here's my setup. I just used LEDs instead of worrying about CCFL's and their respective inverters:

lol I understood the 2nd one more than the first anyway

with the relays if I understand right it would only turn on when doors open and each side lights up when that door opens

does it also let me turn both on at same time when I want?

What I did was unscrewed the dome light and tapped wires to the prongs on each side of the bulb, then ran the wires down over the headliner, down the driverside a-pillar and into behind the stereo to the inverter. This way it comes on with the dome, dims off like the dome, and I can turn it on and off with the dome switch.

I have a radar detector mounted on my drivers side on the winshield a inch or two from the pillar. I plan on running the wires from the detector, through the pillar to the dome light. However i have a sunroof as well and i cant figure out what wire to tap into in that whole setup. any idea?

Wouldn't wiring the foot well lights to the wires that go from the relay to the dome light produce the same effect (fade and control from the overhead switch)?

yes, they would fade like the dome light does, mine do... what i did, and this may not be the easiest way, but for me it was...

1. tap (+) wire into 12v constant wire (i used the constant for the radio, i knew that fuse would be plenty)

2. run (-) wire up the A-pillar and through headliner to dome light

3. crimp wire terminal onto end of (-) wire

4. remove screw holding domelight switch (door/off/on switch)

5. place wire terminal under screw and reattach to dome light switch (this creates the ground-switched circuit using the same ground as the dome light, so you will have full control of the door/off/on of the CCFL's just as you do for the dome light, fade and all)

6. put everything back together and try it out... OoOo purdy

Nice man.

or u can do what i did and just use a constant power and use the door popers as the gronnd. they will only come on when the door is open then

Sure, but there won't be a fading effect then correct?

hombre's idea is probably by far the simplest/cheapest way ... but i still wanted to be able to turn them on with the dome light, even if the doors are closed, which is why i did it my way...

i got the whole idea from Dan to begin with, just put my own spin on it... i can take pics if my instructions were a little too complex for some of you :gap:

what if you r driving and for some reaosn you want the footwell lights on but not the dome light??

i wouldnt mind pictured instructions

then your getting more complicated ;) you can wire up 2 power sources to it and put a switch inline. just make sure both powers are not on at once. so say you want them on but not the dome, u have the dome off and flip the other switch which takes power from some other constant (say cig lighter if only when car is on)

then you're a ricer... pull out the dome light bulb :chuckles:
