My temp gauge for the last 2 weeks will jump up to hot and flashes shortly after i start driving and my heater doesn't work. All i get is cool air. I thought maybe my coolant might be low but i put some in there not too long ago and it hasn't leaked or anything. Someone said to replace thermostat. Anyone else have to do this?

It's most likely a bubble in the cooling system. The thermostat is made to default to fully open if it breaks, so you'd be running cooler than normal. Unless of course it was clogged with gunk, but that rarely happens.

To fix this, you need to run the car till it's warm, preferrably with the heat at full blast and revving the engine at variable speeds (driving works fine, but don't go too far from home). Then shut the car off, pop the hood, and slowly loosen the white bleeder plug on the coolant reservoir. Hot air should seep out when it's loosened enough. Repeat this till no more air comes out. Let the engine cool down and add more coolant to the reservoir. Repeat until the engine runs properly and you have heat.
