Toyota is on a roll. It's the only manufacturer whose mid-size and full-size pickups sales volumes are both up in 2007. So how to keep the momentum going?
Word has it that Toyota is seriously thinking about giving its youth-oriented Scion brand a small two-door unibody pickup with design DNA based on the Scion Fuse sports coupe concept, seen earlier this year at the New York Auto Show.
The Scion xP runabout would join Scion's other cars - the xB, xD, and tC. The xP would be a stepping stone for Gen-Y buyers, who could move from the urban hipness of a Scion pickup into the larger utility of a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra as they start families and careers.
From the side, the pickup has a low, aggressive stance with a race helmet inspired wraparound window that provides a panoramic view. The visor-like windshield is balanced by strong C-pillars, adding a sense of security and protection.
The idea of a future Scion pickup with a high level of performance and additional hi-tech features just might see the light of day.
Power is provided by Scion's 161-hp/163 lb-ft 2.4-liter DOHC four banger. This fuel efficient engine offers plenty of kick for a two-person hauler. It's also plenty of fun, with a 5-speed manual transmission and 6,500-rpm redline.
And when the car is parked, you can sweep your foot over an infrared sensor in the rear bumper to activate the tailgate, which drops down and becomes a bench for sedentary friends. You'll need something to drink, so the rear console houses a detachable beverage cooler. This arrangement is paired with rear foldout speakers for an unexpected social environment.
The xP's base price would start around $12,000 - almost $1,500 less than a Ford Ranger.

not too bad
Man, the new xB's have been growing on me. I still think that the front is the ugliest thing I've seen, but I'd prolly get one.
Now the Scion Fuse, that is one Scion I would definately buy! So odd looking, yet refreshing at the same time.
Where am I going with my post? Well, the new xB looked horrible at first, but soon looks "normal." I bet the xP would do pretty good and from the sketches doesn't look too bad. I want to see what it would look like in "real-life" pictures, like the Scion Fuse. I bet it would nice in black.

If they are right about the $12k price tag, I might pick one up. Sure, it would only have a 2.4, but hell, my old 22R Toyota Pickup could haul almost anything I could want. This would be a great truck for tooling around in.

I'll give some credit to Toyota: they were at least smart enough to make a different brand for the cars they would be way too embarassed to sell under the Toyota name (at least here in America. I guess in Japan they're used to awful looking cars).

How weird. I was talking to my gf about how Scion should make a small truck. It dawned on me after some beat up old Sonoma with its tailgate lettering partially peeled off. The lettering looked it it said SCION.
I'm a fan of small trucks like Toyota's late 70s and early 80's pickup trucks.

I will consider buying one depending on its size and styling.

If you want a 12k light pickup pick up a 95-97 Tacoma 4x4 4cyl. They come with a 2.7 liter. Would cost you less than 12k, it would be just as reliable and it would look 100x better. Here are my old Tacos.

That Scion is just plain ugly... And my bet is it will be as useful as the Honda SUTs.

It actually looks decent. A lot people would probably buy it.
what kind of retard wants a unibody pickup ?
oh right - the same douches who were convinced that their Honda Odyssey with the rear end scooped out (the Ridgeline) was a real pickup

Scion only has one "fail" car that barely meets expectations, and that is the xA. The xP is certain to fair better than the xA because it will probably appeal to a broader audience. As a whole, the Scion brand is successful.

Scion posted May sales of 11,570 units. The tC sports coupe led the way with May sales of 6,615 units. The xB urban utility vehicle posted sales of 3,658 units for the month.

Yeah it's a successful brand, but you'll never catch me driving one. If i wanted a "Sporty Toyota", i would rather buy an AW-- MR2 over what they have now.

This will be another "fail" car. I would be embarassed to be seen in one or even next to one. I'd move if my neighbor bought one.
Like I said earlier, Scion is just a brand to sell cars that Toyota would be too embarassed to sell under the Toyota badge.

At least until it reches production and it's sales are either good or bad. I'll keep my fingers crossed that teenagers won't be as dumb as usual and stay away from an awful vehicle.

I'd rather pickup an old Toyota T100, according to Top Gear test by Jeremy Clark, which is considered scientifically accurate to the most precise degree, that truck is indestructible
