Is this good to do? Does it harm the transmission at all? If you shift without the clutch on an RPM drop and just throw it in gear.

I believe if you rev match perfectly you dont need the clutch. remember some friend's cousin uncle's son told me

Why even do that to your tranny b/c if you ever miss calculate you are going to grind out your tranny. Yes this is possible to do while rev matching perfectly, but it takes some practice to get good at it, and until then you will be burning up a perfectly good tranny

revmatch? I watch my uncle (hes was a mechanic) do it all the time, he does it perfectly all the time, has done it with all his cars. He taught me to do it just on a RPM drop, like rev your engine up to 2800 or 3000 and then the second it starts to drop push the stick in the gear with a little force and let it grab it. It seems so smooth, is there really a danger of doing it?

If you miss numerous times, you'll be replacing parts all the time. :gap:

ive done it through all gears before...but i grinded bad once and never will do it again...

its an absolutely horrible idea, learn to shift faster. burns synchros and if you grind, it tears the running gear and the gear youre going into all to pieces.

Why do you think they put a clutch on the car in first place.
For Looks???
I don't think so, they put the clutch there for a reason so use it!!!

This is true. I have a friend that used to have a 240SX, he would drive around the parking lot with his left foot out the window while manipulating a stick.
I **** my pants.

it takes an experienced driver to do this if you do it right it saves your clutch there is no set rpm to do this at you just have to be able to feel for it. its not that hard ive had my celi for a year and a half and have shifted like this since day one. im also 28 years old and know how to drive. ask any truck driver the use clutch for first gear and reverse only, most of them anyway my uncle owns 3 rigs and has always drove that way

There is no set rpm?
I understand that at every speed at every gear there is a rpm the engine will be at.
eg
if you are going at 40mph 6th gear, thats what? 2000rpm
go into neutral, rev up to 3k, maintaining speed, u can go into 5th without clutch.
thats my understanding?

downshifting is a little tricky i wouldnt mess with it with out clutch ive done it you need to blip the throttle quickly. upshifting is cake

What can I say, I like the convenience of the clutch pedal, it keeps my left foot busy. I'll enjoy it now, in a few years we'll all be paddleshifting anyway. Oh wait, in a few years the cars will drive us.
Big rigs do it. A celica isn't big nor is it a rig so......Use the Clutch that is what it's there for...Even if you are dead on you will still burn something. may not be the clutch but I would rather burn the clutch than the transmission.

^^ synchros imo?
not just the synchros but the gears teeth will get worn down. When you shift without the use of the clutch you are matching the input shafts speed with the output shafts speed.

It's kind of hard to see but there are two shafts with gears. When you push in the clutch there is a loss of power to the transmission which slows down the input shaft to match the output shaft automatically and the synchros match the teeth so you don't grind the gears and change gears with minimal wear. you are doing the same thing but not as safely

i drive without the clutch all the time... if you know how to do it properly, it won't cause any damage. might be more difficult to pull it out of gear if you have a short shifter, though.

How do you even do it?
match the output shaft RPMS with the input shaft RPMS in the transmission by hitting the gas basically
Rebeldriver

Yeah basically, you just accelerate to 3k rpms or so then take your foot off the gas, and when you see the RPMS start to drop throw the stick towards the next gear and let it suck it in. I think im just gonna go with the the clutch rather than risk screwing up a perfectly good transmission, better to replace a clutch a long time down the road than risk anything else.
