Well this is my first post on this board and I had a couple questions for you guys about the Celica GT-S. I just put a deposit down on a 00' today. I used to have a Integra Type R but that got stolen. Anyways I am not very familiar with Toyota's and modding them. My old Integra was fairly heavily modded and I plan on doing so to the Celica. Any info on the Celica would be greatly appreciated and how do you guys think the GT-S compares to a Type R, and I am not trying to start a flame here or anything, thanks.

I am not planning on modding the Celica heavily. My old Type R probably had about $3500 into it so thats really not that much. I pretty much had all the normal bolt-ons and some other goodies. I am curious about the potential of the Celica, I kno they of course make intake exaust and I think V-AFC. What else is there to do, I am only looking for respectable performace. I'd like the car to run low 14's which I doubt is too difficult. So if anyone could jus tell me what would be a good route to go with the celica (ie. keep it stock or do moderate mods). I appreciat all the advice you have given me, and I look forward to participating on this board. Thanks again.

low 14's is possible int he celica, and with bolt on's...but you need to be a experienced driver, and it takes both good weather and practice time behind the wheel.

The type r is of course the superior automobile.

However, I see worlds of potential with the Celica as far as non straight line stuff goes, by adding the Hotchkis tuning total vehicle system and a quaife lsd...

This coupled with some sticky tires, intake/exhaust/(trd or AMSS's header---when they come out) would be a very huge competitor for the type r

The lsd will also help in the 1/4 mile stuff, and in my opinion you go to a better looking car. (and believe me, we've got plenty of body mod options  )

One concern I have with the Celica is that if you shift from first gear at redline to second gear you will not be in the high cam in second gear. Is this true?

Not true at all. I and most other GT-S owners that have an 00/01 (without the fudged up 02 rev limiter , WHICh i might add is Fixed!!! finally)

Can land it all day long. I was just out driving tonite and having a blast with my TRD lightweight flywheel and TRD clutch. I land that sucker in lift all the time.

It will take some practice, but just shift like you'd normall shift a car, while taking it to 8300 rpms and you'll land all the time.

Here's a hint. DON'T EVEN WORRY ABOUT LANDING IT. When I first got the car after reading this site over and over I got all freaked out about the stupid 1-2, but now I just shift like I was driving any other car out there and I land it all day long. It's not even a thought anymore.

Sorry to be a nusance but one more question. What is the name of the high lobe in the Celica. Like Honda has VTEC does Toyota have VVT?

yes the high lobe is called LIFT

its the L part of VVTL-i

Variable Valve Timing and Lift (not variable) with intelligence.

Hey Eric, welcome to the board. Don't get discouraged by these guys, I think you made a good choice. While I think the Type R is the better performance car, I think that the celica makes a better daily driver. I don't mean to start a war, but that's why I am in a celica right now and not a type R. I think you will be pleased with the nice interior (minus the plastics), the decent stock stereo, the gas mileage, and the occasional bursts over 6K rpm. You will miss your LSD, and you will notice a difference in handling and acceleration (I think you have to work a bit harder for both in the celica, but not too much). You are coming from another tightly strung 4 cyl, so you won't really miss the torque. I absolutely love the brakes in the Celica though, it stopps HARD with no fade.

As for mods, same rules apply, but with a more limited pallete than the integra. CAI, exhaust, S-AFC, and LSD are all worthwile additions. Low 14s should not be hard at all, provided you know how to drive fairly well. As for which route to go really depends on what you want out of the car. I need a nice daily driver before a racecar, so it looks like I will be keeping the suspension close to stock and adding a few minor power adders when I get the time. I get a kick out of the car stock, although I've slapped at least intake on just about every car I've owned previously.

I look forward to hearing your opinions and comparions of the car once you get it, so keep us updated. The GTS vs. ITR comparison comes up frequently on this board it seems.

Just be wary friend, as an integra owner i know how easy it is to find Engine upgrades of all sorts. the Celica is mainly a Daily driver's car (but a Damn Good one!). Once you put on your CAI and Exhaust you'll be hard pressed to go elsewhere with the engine.. But there's always LSD and Clutch/Flywheel thatll let the car get more out of the engine.

No VVTLI Controller is the real pisser though.

Oh but somethings always about to come out:chuckles:

P.S. hitting the quote button has the same effect as copy and paste without the annoying personal details... plus it makes some parts bold for you ...

and like slasher said... the only chance you have in a celica is around an orange cone not an orange light...

Well thanks for all the info, I am looking for a daily driver as much as I would like to have a crazy one season car. I think I have made a good choice with the GT-S and I really look forward to driving it. I pick the car up monday so I soon will get to test it more than I did on the test drive. I remember reading comparisons of the Type R to the Celica in Car & Driver, the Type R did outperform the Celica but not by much. For anyone who has not driven a Type R it is a loud car that does not like to go on highways. When travling at 80 mph the tach is almost reving at 6000 rpm which can be very annoying on long trips. I really do like that the Celica has that 6th gear that the Type R needed, as I drive from Mass to NY often. Well I am excited to get the car as soon as I get it i'll get you guys some pics.
