View Full Version : Has anyone else seen this on their moonroof?
Has anyone had this problem with their moonroof? It looks like the tint is actually peeling off! It had been happening a little bit for the last year or so, but I washed it last weekend, and all this film started coming off. I think it's the tint, but when I look from inside, it's still dark, so it might be just some protective covering on the roof or something.
Any ideas? If this is the tint, does anyone know if it's covered under warranty? Any help is always appreciated.

I hope the pics are clear enough for you. If I didn't insert the images correctly, you can find them at http://members.cox.net/pmal00/moonroof.html

watch what you clean it with...i know that there is something in the owners manual about how to clean it....it says not to use glass cleaner...i am sure of that...
And yes...BS the dealer

in the book it says not to use a squeegy or a rough cloth. mine has a rainbow look to it from the inside and lots of lines.

I haven't noticed any blotchyness like you have, but I have had spiderweb cracks (looks like acrylic stress fractures) like some of the others mentioned since the frist or second month I had the car. Only ever washed it with warm soap and water & dry w/ chamois. They are somewhat difficult to notice unless the lighting is just right, but I don't think they should be there. Has anyone had the roof replaced under warranty for this problem?

I was also going to say to watch what you clean it with, since some chemicals could have a negative effect on it. I forget what the owner's manual said exactly, but they warned about it. Either way, I'd take it to the dealer.
Looks like you cleaned it with some sort of glass cleaner.

I've heard a lot of people complaining about this. And Toyota has fixed all of them. I haven't had this happen to mine yet, but I've got a bunch of scratches on it. Don't know how cause I don't put anything on it.

mine is just starting to show the same signs. I just noticed a spot like that a few days ago. How bad does it need to be for toyota to replace it? I've got 43K miles, so I'm guessing they won't do it under warranty. I do have an extended warranty from warrantydirect.com....they should fix it under that.

They make an auto glass cleaner that is safe for tint. House hold cleaner has ammonia in it and that is what ruins tint. I'm not sure it's safe either though if the moonroof is made out of plexiglass. Mine has those spiderweb lookin cracks all through it.

The entire right half of my tint has peeled and I only have 30K on the car. Looks like I'll be paying the dealer a visit if this is really covered under warranty. I figured the dealer would just give me abunch of BS about how it was my fault. (thats what they did with the foglights that don't work either)

i had one replaced under warranty for the "cracks". then, my new one did it too. a toyota rep looked at my second one, and showed me a trick to see if they are scratches or not. take the oil off of you nose (kinda sick that he did this to my car huh?) and rub it on the "cracks". they dissappear. if they were cracks, they would still show, so he told me they were scratches. i may believe him. it kinda makes sense. if they were cracks, then water or anything else would find it's way under the tint and show up. who knows though?
just try it.

Good thing I don't have moonroof. I don't have to worry about his problem.

Yea, I have a small list of things that are off on my car and that was one of them. They look I lot like tiny stress cracks from heat or something. I wonder if they are replacing them with the same part.
Oh yea, does anybody elses speedo seem to be off? Mine seems to be like 4-5mph faster than I'm going.

Had my car since july 2000 and my sunroof is in perfect condition. Never cleaned it with anything other than the soap I wash the car with. Just throwin in a possible solution. ;)
mine started around the edges but toyoyta won't cover it because they said i was over the 30,000 mile warrenty ( it covers sqeaks, loose parts, and rattles ). i do have the extened warrenty which cover major engine parts only ( so they say ). should that still cover it?

They should cover it, if your car is under 36,000miles or 3 years.
For all the people that got their fix. Did they replace the sunroof or just fix the tint on top of the sunroof?

Im going to get mine replaced soon. I have the same prob. The dumn azz at the dealer was bs-ing me about my warranty. I have 37 thou on my car. I also have a extended warranty. He said if its past 36 its not covered. but with a little attitude and treat of calling his supperiors. Thay changed the way they where talking to me and said that it will be taken care of. So ill keep you posted on what happens.
