I found a 95 Civic DX Coupe with a GS-R B18C1 VTEC swap in my area

however - the rear quarter panel has rust - the left side is basically rotted right though

how much does it cost to repair this sort of thing ? I would be willing to take the car if he'd negotiate out the cost of repairing the rust but I don't know how much that is - he told me a $ amount but I can't trust anything the seller says.

it's alot. If it's in the quarter panel, it's most likely deeper than that. You'll need a new quaterpanel, then paint etc. Unibody, some welding maybe needed. It's not cheap.

Quarter panel rust is a steer clear situation. It's gonna cost you. I'd figure close to $800 for a proper job?

I fixed rear quarter rust on a 92 Maxima SE I owned. Stupid idea. It ended up costing me $1300, and I only sold the car about 6 months later for $2000. Probably could have sold it as it was prior to fixing it, for $1600 - $1800.

If it was on the front, I would say no big deal though. Easy to find a used quarter panel (especially for a Civic), or even patch jobs can be done very cheap.

the seller claims that it can be patched for $400-$500 - I'm more concerned on whether its spread elsewhere

I know this rust is SUPER common on Civics, especially up north

I'm going to have my bodyshop up here take a look at it before I purchase

I got him down to $4250 for a 95 with 120k (40 on B18C1 engine), new stage 1 clutch, new fidanza flywheel, new water pump/belts, 4 new tires, pioneer head unit, and bmw x5 HIDs (only the regulars work, no high beams) - plus a non-functional tach

I'm pondering just saying $4000, take it or leave it

and if he says no, I'll get Nina a V6 Mustang instead

This is for driving up "there" right? Has Nina driven up there in a winter yet? I'd stay away from the civic at this point. If all you are seeing is the quarter panel, I'm sure there is more than that. Remember, salt is on the road 9 out of the 12 months up there. And the mustang is just a bad idea all together.

Yeah its for "up here"

What's wrong with a Civic? There's a bazillion of them up here.

and what's wrong with a Mustang?
I've driven in the snow in a BMW 5-series and a Lincoln LS (both powerful V6/RWD cars) with no problems - you just need snow tires.

there's nothing wrong with it, if you are used to it. I wouldn't go out and start her off in the snow with a rear wheel drive. As for the civic, I wouldn't go with the one you're looking at. There is bound to be more rust than what you're looking at. If you can already see it, it means it's been there for a while now.

Only real way to remove the rust and keep it away is a new quarter panel, they can be found cheap at junkyards and than if you got the right tools or access to the tools ,painting it yourself can save some money.

I don't get peoples understanding of RWD and thier effects in snow..RWD cars will always have better control in a slide than a FWD car,you just gotta know how to use it to your benifit.

it doesnt matter if its surface rust, what matters is whats rusted underneath the surface rust.

I don't have a problem with it. I learned on an 88 crown vic. But I grew up up there, and had a healthy respect, etc for it. You're talking about a person that has maybe seen a grand total of 3 inches of snow in her life living in DC. It's a little different when you get into the snow belt of UPstate NY.

First winter drive was definitely a fun experience for me. It doesn't snow that often here, (2-3 times a year we get 3+ inches) so the first time we got some decent snow I waited till like 10:00 when everyone was off the road and went driving around for a good hour and a half getting the feel of things. The next day I went to an empty parking lot with some girls who wanted to come along and slid around for awhile. Good times.

up in Rochester it'll snow 3 inches an hour, not total. When it gets going up there, it gets going. And they don't close down work because there's snow, you leave extra early.

Yeah - my contract specifically states if the office opens (meaning SOMEONE can make it to the office) and I'm not here, its my problem, not theirs.

because if I wanted a POS Civic I'd spend $1500 and get yet another POS Civic

I'm not going to spend $4000 on something I'm going to treat like absolute ****

Then don't. There is your answer.
