View Full Version : Tein, Greddy and the 8

Jeff, Matt (speedee), and I took most of the day Saturday to install a GReddy SP2 cat-back exhaust, TEIN Basic coilovers, and paint the calipers and rotor hats on the 8!
The exhaust install went relatively smooth, aside from the bolts that go to the cat, which have those stupid springs on them. Matt had a lot of fun with those.
The coilovers were a different story. Taking the stock strut out of the car was like a puzzle that only had one way in and one way out. Matt had to stand on the caliper to sag the suspension enough for Jeff to get clearance to spin, and maneuver the shocks and coilovers in and out...and they each came out a different way. The rears required removing the sway bar endlink, the headlight level sensor link, and drop the camber arm down off the chassis.
I took care of the painting of the calipers and rotor hats as the men did the grunt work ;) I also disassembled most of the friggin trunk so they could get to the rear strut bolts.
Some pics for your enjoyment:

After, nice and even! The RX8 has a very uneven stock suspension with the front end looking like it's going to take off for Mars.

Yeah... Not really. I've done a few cars and I must say this was the most difficult as far as removing the stock suspension. For the front, the upper and lower control arms, sway bar, and everything else that was up there just made it an absolute bitch to get the stock strut/spring out without me putting all my weight on the rotor. The back was the easiest and quickest even though DIY's online said the back was the hardest. And then, not having a spring compressor and taking off the tophats was like playing Russian Roulette.

Definetly. Nothing huge, but there is asbolutely more throttle responsiveness in the mid and high range RPMs! I am 110% happy with going with Greddy over all the other options. It's not as loud and high pitched as most of the exhaust systems sound on rotaries.

very nice upgrades
I loved the Tein Basics on my car - get the racingbeat swaybars to complete the handling
also you should look into the high flow midpipe - the cat is incredibly restrictive - don't go catless or you'll shoot fire (i made that mistake - and its also socially irresponsible to run without a cat)

Egh...the human condition won't prevent us from destroying this planet...we might as well let the gearheads have their fun on catless E85 ethanol tunes while the rest of the world goes hydrogen/electric :gap: .
And as far as greddy is concerned...this is what I think of the guy who's supposed to be producing the v-manage for all other cars besides the EVO that they haven't released yet:

I should've added flames...lazy SOB. Nobody is buying the damn thing on the EVO forums, and they're already being posted up on eBay.

Sounds like my first time replacing the spyder suspension. Couldn't use the napa spring compressors because the strut "tunnell" was to small. Squeeeeeeeeze!!! :chuckles: After dealing with my solid axle toyota pickup I conisider everything else easy fo-cheesy :)

Affordable for now! Just wait until your filling it with gas every 240 miles, and getting normal standard services done.

Their customer service is terrible, the e-manage sucks - many people on this forum are familiar with my trials and tribulations dealing with GReddy

With current incentives, and assuming you can get the car at invoice, you can walk off with a brand new RX-8 for around $21,500 - eat your heart out everyone who bought a Celica or RSX brand new off the lot.
Of course, they have to heavily incentivize the 8 because it sucks oil and gas and isn't nearly as fast in a straight line as it should be

And I heard it's cheap on insurance too because it's considered a sedan :d

Lookin good Krysy! Though I would double check those front tires, I think you may have switched them when putting them back on... the tire tread in the second to last pic looks backwards! :AF:

weird I didn't have any problems installing the teins on Marc's car. I think the only PITA was the front sway bar, mostly because the trubo was snaked around it.

Nice Mark... :chuckles:
Now I know why I still keep posting on the Celica boards. I love you guys! Matt def was the one to blame for the DIRECTIONAL tires being put on wrong ;) And then after he fixed, it he had to fix it again because he left the hubcentric ring inside the rim and Jeff couldn't figure out why the rim with the ring wouldn't fit on the rotor that still had the ring on it. Guys.... gotta love ya. I'll leave you alone though you caught enough **** from the audience that was at your place that day. Plus yeah the heat.... :gay: :p
Thanks everyone for all the compliments though!
Despite the car's short commings in cost to maintain, lack of torque, and being under rated in horse power, I am really enjoying it. It's got a great top end, is a lot of fun to drive, and rides awesome. And like everyone said, my insurance is dirt cheap. I get rated as a 4-door. The car is $300/yr cheaper than my Celica for insurance.
