Nope, though it did have a bird emblem back in the day. It came from the Spanish word for "heavenly/from the heavens".

Mosquito!
well not really, but a while back I was using worldlingo to translate some Japanese Celica sites and the word "Celica" kept getting translated as "cecily mosquito". Apparently, ka = mosquito in Japanese... dunno how celi gets to be cecily though, go figure.

:nono:

From Toyota.com:What does it mean?
Celica: The name is derived from the Spanish word for "heavenly" or "celestial".http://pressroom.toyota.com/mediakit/toyota/2002kit/2002celica_h.html (at the bottom)

Thanks man, never seen that before but this strikes me:

In 1988, Toyota introduced the "ultimate Celica"*, the All-Trac Turbo. With full-time all-wheel-drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, it immediately took its place as the flagship of the Celica range.*RMM's name was not that original huh?

And they stopped the idea of AWD + Turbo because?!?!?!.............man who was the idiot who scrapped the car?!!

For 1994, Toyota pulled out all the stops. The sixth-generation Celicas bore very little resemblance to their previous brethren. Celica was only available in ST and GT configuration for the 1994 model year, but the addition of the optional "sports package" to the GT produced GT-S-like handling. The All-Trac model was dropped, and for 1994 there was no convertible.

Do they just repeat their history? They made a celica with no resemblance to the previous ones (again in 2k), they offered a "sports package" (again in 2k1)but at least back then the package was worth it, and again they mention the dropping of the All-Trac.

Will there ever be another AWD/Turbo Celica..........if whoever heads Toyota's R&D stays then no.....but if a real enthusiast takes over, then yes......

just my .02

For 1994, Toyota pulled out all the stops. The sixth-generation Celicas bore very little resemblance to their previous brethren. I don't know why they said it didn't resemble any other Celicas. It looks similar to the 1st gen Celica (4 headlights, tail lights look similar, kinda retro).

The name Celica means in spanish heavenly, but that seems to be not related to the choise of the name Celica my Mr. Toyoda ( not Toyota, but Toyoda).
The intention was to name all the types starting with a C. Why he made that choise I never found out jet.

So, he came up with :
Corolla,
Celica,
Corona,
Crown,
Camry.

Remeber the Supra at first was the top model Celica, named the Celica Supra.

In the 80 ies they left that line and came up with MR2, Tercel, Yaris etc.

In the beginning the Toyota cars didn't have a Toyota logo. The Celica had it's own logo. That is not a bird, not a mosquito, but a japanese dragonboat.............

The next part of the story I heared, but was never confirmed, so maybe someone (maybe celica gte racing) can help me out.:

It is told that Mr. Yoyoda owned a dragonboat and was very proud of this boat who was winning a lot of races for him.
Therefore he put a logo of the dragonboat on the Celica.

I include a pic of the logo and you can clearly see it's a boat.

The pic is from a Celica AT23 from 1975

Hope it helped..................

The reason there are no more All Trac Celicas is becasue Toyota does not use them for WRC anymore.
