Hi, I'm pretty new at driving stick and was wondering how you guys shift. When shifting from 1st to 2nd, do you guys keep your foot on the clutch throughout 2nd gear and let go of it when you shift to 3rd? ..... I ask because....while driving tonight I could have sworn my foot was off the clutch while accelerating in 2nd gear... thw car didn't stall at all.... I would really appreciate responses.... I might need to take some more driving lessons:confused:

As long as you're above like 10-15 mph, the car won't stall in 2nd if you let off the clutch. It may be kinda hard to drive at that low RPM, though.
I hope you're not keeping the clutch in while your're accelerating. It'll wear out your clutch really quick.
yeah.. only thing you need to worry about is from a deadstop to first and even more worst... a deadstop on a hill to first

you can start the car in second if you really wanted to.

let me get this straight.....your foot is on the clutch only in 1st...and when shifting from 1st to 2nd...you just step on the clutch all the way down and let go of it?.......I'm really confused...is driving in 1st and second different?

You think 5th is bad! Ive done it in all the gears!!! INcluding 6th! (I was really bored in a empty parking lot one day waiting on my gf) Took forever for 6th to get out, I remember. Did it on the first try on every gear, didnt stall once.

ok here it goes.......
1. Put the clutch all the way in, put it into first gear
2. Give it a little gas (1-2k rpms - when your first beginning, maybe you want to try to start off in 2-3k, but when you get good, u wont even need to give it a little gas before) and start to let the clutch out, and as you are letting it out, your rpms will start to drop, so give it a little more gas while your letting the clutch out, but once you start to get a good roll, let the clutch out completely, but smoothly. (you'll catch on to it, its all practice and feel for the clutch)
3. When shifting into 2nd gear....Let off the gas, put the clutch all the way in, shift into 2nd, let the clutch out, and then start to give it gas. (when you start to get the hang of it, you can start to give it a little gas while your letting the clutch out). <----Same thing goes for every gear as far as steps to take when shifting.

From a stop
1. Push clutch in.
2. Put shifter into 1st.
3. Slowly release clutch while slowly pressing on the accelerator. You're basically trying to balance inputs from the clutch and accelerator to keep the engine going and to start the car in motion.
4. Let off the clutch once it has grabbed. You'll know when it does because the RPMs will steady out and start rising at a constant speed (providing you don't let up on the accelerator). You may also feel a slight jerk if you don't give it enough gas/give it too much gas.
5. Accelerate up to around 4-5000 RPM's (normal driving).
6. Push in clutch while letting off the gas.
7. Move shifter from 1st to 2nd.
8. Start to release the clutch while giving gas, keeping a steady forward acceleration.
9. Release clutch when it has grabbed.
10. Repeat steps 5-9 until you reach your intended speed.

No...this is how to do it correctly...
1. Bring car back...
2. buy automatic...
3..get friend that can teach you to drive stick..
4. kill his clutch learning...
5. trade back for a stick...
6...insert gun, pull trigger...

I dont think that by learning to drive stick ona brand new car will kill the clutch at all. I had never driven stick before I got into my celica, and it now has 31k+ on it with the original clutch and I'm very hard on the car. Ive gone through two sets of tires from burning out/racing and still my clutch holds strong. I think the clutches inthe celicas are built very tough.

this is almost as bad as a girl in my driver ed. class last year. She was looking at the rpm gauge instead of the speedometer and the instructor kept telling her to slow down. Seriously though, you should have bought the "driving stick for dummies" book before you bought this car. j/p. But you should have someone that knows how to drive stick with you that can give you some pointers while you drive.
