I emailed SCC to find out what really happened with the matrix and this is the email that I got back from the teck editor.

One detail is wrong. I didn't break it, whoever drove it in Florida broke
it. Sorry, I'm just a little sensitive about that. We're guessing they put
cheap gas in it.

-Dave

This might make some of you feel better because if they did put the wrong grade of gas then it would seriously mess up that motor.

Wow that is just ****in dumb if that's the case.

Somebody needs to get fired. Or hire me :D

I wouldn't put the wrong gas in there ;)

i dunno... would you really want a job where all you do all day is drive around the country in super modded automobiles? (said with a LOT of sarcasm)

Regardless that shouldnt happen... unless they put Diesel in it; or even worse Vin Diesel :chuckles:

Goes to show you that reliable forced induction will be difficult with the high compression ratio.

Yup. Believe it or not, everynow and then the delivery truck will put the 87 octane in the 93 octane tank. Things happen. The car ought to be able to get home without blowing a piston.

Unless you go drag racing and have major detonation it should easily handle it.

The tuning will make or break the setup. Even if they did fill up with a lower octane fuel, the knock sensor would've kicked in to reduce the ignition timing etc to prevent engine damage.

Here's an exact quote from an email that SCC's Dave Coleman sent me:

A month ago I would have said that our system (XS turbo kit with
Elecromotive engine management) was bulletproof, but then someone shot a
hole in it. We don't know who, or how, but someone broke a piston.
Turbocharging that enigne without dropping the compression is hairy
business.

-Dave Coleman

"Turbocharging that enigne without dropping the compression is hairy
business."- Who would know more about turbocharging the 2zz than these guys, based on how much time and money they spent on their turbo project. Listen to this warning, fellas.

yep. maybe they should now get a set of lower compression pistons or something along with rods and turn up the boost a bit :chuckles:
