I am highly thinking of selling my celica and gettin a 02 wrx for around $24,000 FULLY loaded. For one its faster, all wheels drive( i am in denver now), and of course TURBO! What you think of this decision? I just want some input on the WRX, and see if its gonna last me. Right now, i am going to get it, so unless i hear otherwise, my car will soon be for sale.
thanks

Uhm, get it...
Really, yours is the only opinion that matters here right? If you'd rather the Scooby, then get it...
I "personally" think they're ugly, but it's just my opinion... otherwise it's a great ride...

I think that guy broke the tranny himself and is now denying it.

Well... anyways a tranny failure is better than a complete engine breaking up....I had a similar situation with my celi and warantee didn't want to cover until my lawyer steped in..!
Get a lawyer friend send a certified letter"dummy treat" to the dealer " sew everyone here if..." and I assure you you'll get a call next day saying "we'll we evaluated the situation and we are going to cover it..."
When you talk to them make them see that you mean business....

If you aren't hung up on appearance, then get the WRX. Although it's not a great looking car, it's stock performance, and its performance potential when modded are the best in this price range.

My roomate has a WRX. Perfomrnace wise it's a bargain for what you pay. But I agree it's ugly. He talks smack when we race but my celica is still light years ahead in apperance. Whats more inportant to you- performace or appearance?

This topic has been brought up so many times already. If you want some really good reasons on either for or against, I suggest you read this really long topic on the subject:
http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21025&highlight=Buying+a+WRX
I own both a WRX and a Celica. It all depends on your point of view..but after driving both...I wouldn't trade my car in for a WRX. Even though the WRX can be made to be a beast...there are enough good reasons NOT to buy one when comparing to the Celica.
It's your money, do what you think will make you happy...but I really suggest you read that link.

Thanks for all the input. Are they any other cars around the price of the wrx for the same performance and handling? as of now i am going to get it
ArchangelX
06-02-2002, 12:34 AM
Well..the performance is pretty hot..but the handling is like way underneath the Celica...so I don't know about that one.
If you were a manual GT, I'd tell you to keep it and slap on a S/C or T/C..hell..now that I think about it man..to be honest..having an auto GT is actually a pretty good place to be in.
We all already know that automatic turbos (when tuned correctly) are the shiznit, are more reliable during 1/4 runs, and are more simply to use (push pedal, go).
Hmm..dude, if you think about it, you could slap a turbo or S/C on your car pretty damn easily, and NOT lose out so much in negative equity on the trade in...
The WRX is nice, yes, but the handling and styling are two different extremes.
I'd seriously considering looking into the T/C or S/C option first, bro.

The tranny in Subaru's have always been a weakpoint of theirs. The build up of the Subaru 2.5RS in SCC explained this since both the WRX and the 2.5RS shares the same tranny. But in STi trim the tranny has been beef-ed up.

The gap in handling between the WRX and the Celica MAY not be that huge, and may be mostly due to tires. The stock Bridgestones on the WRX are not as sticky as our stock Yokohamas, because those Bridgestones are all-purpose tires meant to also be driven on dirt as well as paved roads.
After SCC slapped some Falken Atenzis on their Project WRX, they remarked that it was "faster than Toyota's MR2 Spyder" with a 69.9mph in 700 ft slalom. The WRX still had the stock springs and shocks and its only suspension mod was a rear anti-roll bar.

Good point....
I've gotta agree that the tires that came on my WRX are crap. And those rims are gonna be one of the first things that go....makes it look like a dang Kia or something.
Still..just with sport springs, I can tell that there's a HUGE difference in the way both cars handle.
There's this S-Turn on-ramp as you're coming off 56th street and going soutbound on I-5 up here in Tacoma..and I can take that thing like a bat outta hell in my Celica, it just squats down and takes it like a champ.
But the WRX, I just don't feel as comfortable or as near in control taking that thing....not even close. It rides simply too high, has too much body roll, and just doesn't stick to the ground as much as I'd like to.
I definetly use that spot as one of my benchmarks in my cars....the WRX is the loser on that one.

after driving both car i'll have to say the celica inspires more confidence with the way it handles. Many of the turns i took i could take at the saem speed but it pretty much just took more balls ot do it with the WRX for the same reasons stated above. The car itself feels like a boat, it has a good amount of body roll and scares you as you go through the turn esp if your used to a celica but to get the most out of it's handling you have to just balls up and put the power down, right when you think it's not going to stick it surprises the hell out of you and does and when put with some sticky tires can be one heck of a performer in the hands of the right driver. The celica takes more finese than balls to drive fast. With the celica to get through with any kind of speed smooth inputs and outputs are very important and the limit is much more predictable than the WRX. You can't be afraid to really toss that WRX around, the car makes up for a lot of mistakes and is very forgiving. For those who think the WRX is a much slower auto-xer than the GTS, let it be known that when driven properly the WRX usually gets the win, the gts's lack of an LSD really does hurt the car. AWD+torque+sticky tires+a good driver= a real competitor and once you start modding the possibilites are endless with that thing.
I would highly consider the WRX for my next car but i just want to see how SOA handles this hole tranny issue. Right now for my next car though it's pretty much already decided that it will still only be 2wd but it'll be the back wheels pushing the car :D

From what I've read and from my experiences test-driving the WRX, I absolutely agree with this assessment.

Actually there is a reason that Subby trannies are called glassboxes...
That guy just needs to get a lawyer, they can't deny the coverage, Subaru is just wrong in that case.

I think the tranny issues with the Subarus are not as bad as people are saying. If you look at Consumer Reports, Subarus in the US have very good reliability ratings, and in Japan, the WRX is known as a stout car to use for tuning.

i couldn't agree more with keyshawn, every car has it's set of problems some bigger than others (more celicas have had squeeling belts than WRX tranny problems, the s2000's have bee having crazy problems with their drivers side auto window down not work when they put the top down) , look how many WRX has been sold and are running huge gobs of power and are doing just dang fine. 100 or so out of what some odd thousand cars sold isn't as bad as you think.
Karim
Can't think of a better car for the location you're in. If I lived in Denver and could only have my ITR and a P/U truck I'd sell the ITR for a WRX. "Sad" but true.

You are looking at losing money, the same amont of money that could be but in to a turbo. Use the money you would save to trick out you celi, add level 10 part to power up you automatic tramission and let the timeslips fly.

After the $10,000 worth of warranty work toyota has done to my Celica I would not get the subaru after reading that post. Good warranty coverage is very important unless you've got five grand in the bank to dump at any time.

don't give in to the darkside! have you driven one yet? I'd suggest doing so...i was considering the same thing, but the rex just doesn't drive like the celica, its not nearly as much fun. But anyways, if you sell your car, sell me your spoiler!!! since we're both in denver, and we both have black cars. :)
