View Full Version : Is this Celica worth it?

Ok, so I have wanted a Celica for awhile now, love the looks, need the MPG...

I found one on Craigslist (2000 GT), for $5,600, Carfaxed it, clean title.

Owned by a 64 year old grandmother, never driven crazy or anything.

pros:
Price
Local
Price
no problems ever
price
oil changed on time
price
old lady owned/taken care of
Did I mention the price?

Cons:
Auto
150k miles :AF:

But is it worth it just because of the price? I need a cheap car asap that also gets great mpg, my car is in the shop now and just keeps dieing on me... I mean, I plan on modding it over time, and I know I will never be able to "race" because its an auto, but that has never been my intentions anyways...

Here are some pics (as if you all don't know what a stock Celi looks like ;) )

just want some feedback from some experienced celica owners before I do anything I may regret later...

Oh, and hi, im new

Good price for that car. If you can handle it being an auto, get it.

I know, but ya, money is REAL tight... :(

And if I get a stick, I know I will want to make it faster... Thus spend more money. Which I don't have... Besides that, insurance is goin to be a buttload (quoted at like $2100 a year)

If I just stick with general performance mods, mod the crap out of the suspension, and appearance mods, i will be happy.

(My dad was head of Marketing at Infiniti for years, so I got to go to the track with all of them and drive all the fast cars from other companies too. I was there when they were first test driving the G35 coupe back in the day. I know how to drive, its the technical things I don't know that much about. And I havn't talked to him in 2 years... Long Story...)

I just need to know if this is good to go for. Its the best priced Celi I have found so far.

Hey, check out the links in my sig, there's a Chino Hills Celica Meet coming up, you should go, even if you still don't have your Celica by then - get teh feel of the community.

There's a few Celicas around the San Diego region that are going for cheap with lesser miles. If you're down to drive, you might find better deals.

the one with the subs and rims, check the mileage, if not that system shouldn't make him charge more for the car-its a cheap setup.

EDIT: Just checked on shipping, like $700-900 shipping... Can you point me towards that? oh wait... bleh I can't inspect it personally... blah... well point me towards it if you will anyways, and I will see how it flushes out...

Wow....

don't buy a car for a daily driver if you cant fully inspect it.

I'm going through it right now (check the thread where i want to sell mine). Bought the car from vermont (~500 miles) and it drove fine on the way home, minus stuff like the trannsmission getting stuck in 6th, not going into first, grinding into second. And a few other things that if i had more then 10 minutes with the car before i gave him the money i would have known.

Again, i would not at all recommend getting your daily driver shipped to you without knowing 100% what your getting into.

As for the gt gts thing, no matter what car you get unless you get the top of the line model your going to hear that. If you like the way it looks, drives, and is in your price range then get it.

ok, so I checked it out.

Everything looks good, good oil (changed regularly), transmission fluid is nice and red/pink, all electrics/lights work, changes gears smoothly, starts like a charm.

The body is fine, the front right headlight has been replaced, because her daughter backed into it out of the driveway, so that one is nice and clear, the front left is fogged up slightly, and yellowy, so I want to change that one out...

2 problems:

She accidentally scraped the side back bumper on the way out of her driveway to meet with me (the scrapes were fresh), the pics show what the damage is.. Blue is a scrape on the bumper, red is a slight area that is goin to need to be repainted... (my camera batt was dead, so I couldn't snap any pics.) Gives me an excuse to buy a kit right off the bat and have it painted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/TheBestUkester/th_Damage2.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/TheBestUkester/Damage2.jpg)

Second is the engine covers, the one on the far left of the engine is completely gone, she has no idea what happened to it, probably when they fixed the headlight they didn't replace that, and the main one with the VVTI or whatever on it has a crack.

Other then those two things its really good, the body could use a good buffing, but other then that it all looks/works great.

I am goin to research it a bit, but she said that she would knock down the price a bit to compensate for the damage, she is getting a quote from her guy, and I need to get a few quotes or whatever (I know a few guys that own body shops, and a few of you guys do/know some too, anybody here have mad hookups?), so now I get to choose a rear bumper that I like, and new engine covers, yay me!

now off to find cheap ones...

well after months of research and looking...

and after going through all the work to find a celica...

Banks won't give me a loan, due to A) absolutely 0 credit, and B) the car is more then 5 years old...

Guess I am goin to stick with the Ford 12mpg gas guzzler for now...

No one will co-sign with you?

And as for the 0 credit thing, that will start to work against you. get a credit card with a low limit and just buy a game, or something with a monthly subscription you can pay off every month. Thats what i did and less then a year later i was able to get a 6000$ car loan (for my 00 celica they said is worth 12k). the main thing is to pay it off, and if you do have to keep a balance on it, keep it under 75% of your total credit.

ya no co-signer, and I know that I need to do that, and I am goin to now, but I had no need to do it before, and I didn't want to bother with a credit card...

That sucks. Your parents won't help with the loan? :sadwave:

another good idea is to apply for a Shell Gas Card (just an example). Use it to buy your gas, pay it off, build up your credit.

also the fact that the loan is for next to nothing

why not just put it on a credit card? Just get one of those new 0% for a year dealies and pay it off religiously

I personally wouldnt pay 5600 for a auto with 150k miles. If i were looking for something like that i would get some other car for MUCH cheaper.

No. They will break down no matter what. Crank walk and broken lower arm joints are common among turbo 2g's. He's gonna want to mod it, only increasing the chances of these problems to happen quicker.

The price is too much for a car that is 7 years old with 150K on it. Mines a 2002 with 51k, and it is only worth about 8,000 if im lucky.

Not to mention she could probly have the engine disease that is persistant in 00-02 1zz engines.

My advice, get one made after 2002. Or buy a used POS civic
