something to match the color of your car? Good idea... have them parked side by side, it'd make for a great picture.

from what i've heard the 600's are bad beginner bikes due to the speed...i've talked to people who have been riding their whole life and they said its best to start out with a 250 especially if you haven't ridden dirt bikes and things of that sort before...but thats just what i've heard

get something with a low power-weight ratio for a beginner bike.

realize that the slowest street bike will still run a mid 13, beating 99% of the road cars out there.

so with that in mind, get a light, cheap bike you don't mind dropping all the time (you will fall), invest in gear and wear it EVERY TIME YOU RIDE, and don't worry about power or image - its your starter bike, you're learning - there'll be plenty of time for a 600 later on.

Looks fun :) I hope to get one one day after I graduate and away from the snow.

Get an R1. A beginner doesn't need a smaller bike, they just need to keep off the throttle until they have some mileage behind them.

ninja or the suzuki gsx are one of the best beginner bikes

isn't riding dirtbike totally different than a streetbike since the turning is different?

lol an inline 4 is gonna be fast. id say go for it and just be really careful on it. ive ridden dirtbikes/quads my whole life and i love my R6.

Nothing wrong with a 600cc starter bike. I started with a GS 500 and outgrew it in 2months. I bought a CBR F4i and rode it for 2yrs and the speed/power was ALWAYS enough. For a starter bike I say, any 600cc. Yamaha YZF600 (not R6), Katana, and Suzuki SV 650 are also good choices for the more docile of the street bikes. WEAR PROPER GEAR....BE SAFE!!!!

why not an R6??? I've looked at a couple of them and they r pretty cheap currently looking at a 04 R6 with 4K miles. Drove it around campus and on the interstate. I am now officialy in love. Its so nice to finally drive somethin with some torque

Pick up a CBR1000RR and youll never regret it, or a CBR1100XX if you can find one. Being able to do 300km/h + isnt a bad thing :)

if your new to a bike, do yourself a favor and learn on a dirtbike first. once you have that down, itll only take a day to get used to a bike

rammerjammer7, I would highly suggest avoiding any 600CC+ motorcycle, especially a Supersports bike for your 1st motorcycle. If you can find one, I suggest getting either a 500CC or 400CC bike. Yes there are people who bought an R1 or CBR1000RR for their first bike but in all honesty, the power to weight ratio would be overwhelming and unless you're insane or suicidal, there is now way to fully utilize the power on the streets. Like marc said, "the slowest street bike will still run a mid 13". Use your head & wear the gear. Good luck on your decision.

there's a GSXR600 and an SV650

I HIGHLY recommend the 650 as a starter bike over the R600

you guys have to realize with these race replicas its not just the power

throttle response is insane, handling is twitchy and hard to control - they just aren't bikes for learners

sure, go get an R1 and we'll be glad to scrape you off the pavement when you mistakenly twist the throttle a bit too much, and as a result of the hypersensitivity it launches you and you overcompensate to avoid an obstance, the bike's hypersensitive handling sending you directly into oncoming traffic.

when I lived in DC there was an average of about 3 motorcycle fatalities/weekend in the DC Metro area.

ok guys after reading all ur feedback and researching some more i realize that starting out with a 600cc bike is not the smartest thing in the world. How about a GS500???

My buddy has an R6 and it's fun to ride but I'd never buy one and I have 3+ years of experience. I started on an F2, easy to ride and good power. Like the other guy said, just have to be smart about it. 250 will get old quick, 500 is a good compromise.

How about a GS500???

Like I said before.....i had a GS500 and outgrew it in less than 2 months. It just wasn't fun to ride and was underpowered. It will be fun at first but will get old quick. I think a nice compromise between the GS500 and a 600cc crotch rocket like the CBR is the Suzuki SV650S, sporty and good power. Also the resell value is a lot better.

Yes you can start on a 600cc rr bike.
Should you? That's debatable and depends on you.
Go to a bike forum an use their search button.

If your experienced, go for the sportbike. If not and especially if you are planning to be more than a fair weather rider, get something more along the lines of a nice used CB-750, an older Nighthawk, (yeah, yeah, partial to my Honda's) ect, ect. It won't be such a big deal if you drop it, insurance will be a bit less, initial cost will be much less and if after a couple of months your ready for something bigger/better/faster/sportier your trade-in or resale will still be just about what you paid for it.
For the record, a CBR1000F has my ride for the past 17 years. Ride smart, ride safe and dress for the fall.

09-14-2007, 06:25 AM
hey LAMAR what not an R6?

It was designed for the track and is not comfortable for 30+ minute rides. That's why I've always been a Honda guy.

The R6 is badass though....

there is no GSXR650

he's talking about the vtwin SV650

SV650 or GS500 or ES500 are perfect starter bikes that will hold their value and you can sell for as much as you got it for when you're ready to upgrade.

I agree 100%. Once I get to sultan and swyn's stage of no longer being able to modify my car, I'll be getting a cheap bike.

Outgrowing a bike is the dumbest **** I've ever heard,I had a 87 750 GT for almost 2 and a half years before I kicked it up to a 97 katana 600,rode that for 4 months, till my friend bought it and I got a 2006 gsxr-600.

3 months later that twitching sporty throttle got the best of me and I got sent into the ground at 40mph.

If you ever outgrow a bike your a douche bag, that has never ridden a bike past 10% of its capabilitys.

Experianced riders don't complain about twitchy thottles. They also tend to upgrat to 1/4 and 1/5th turn throttle tubes.

god thats retarded. I'm jsut assuming right now you dont ride, like all the other "ooh lok at the pretty paintjob" guys who rush out to buy these bikes which IMO should be reserved for seasoned riders only.

RR? race replica? you gotta be kidding me, its lack of respect for what these machines can do that makes so many young idiots die on them.
Nice not knowing you. Get some life insurance squidboy, and stop recommending irresponsible motorcycles to first time buyers

Suprised the sv650 hasnt come up much, thats like the king of starter bikes.

take the msf rider course "motorcycle safety foundation" and they use 250s for the course. any 600 supersport is gunna be too much for a newb. yeah you may outgrow the speed and acceleration of a smaller bike but i guarantee most on this forum can ride any bike to its limits including myself with an exclusion being anyone here whos done track days. i used to drag race a 99 zx7r now i have a honda dualsport that im building for supermoto racing. supermotos are good for beginners.
