The synchros are burned out, a common problem with the celica's c60 tranny. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap or easy fix.

As I was reading this part, I heard it in my head. Ouch.
I think BPS is right.

I'm not completely sure on this but shouldn't you TAKE it to the mechanic first so they can really find out what's wrong? It would suck if you ordered the parts & it turns out to be something a lot smaller.

Hrm, just take it to a mechanic and see what he has to say about it.
If it matches up with what we think it is, you're good to go.

my 4th gear does the samethin when i downshiftin. i have a little trick though when you push down the clutch downshift into 3rd and then quicky stick it into 4th it shouldnt grind atleast mine doesnt when i do that,( but remember your foot still has to be on the clutch). i let my friend powershift in my car and now my 3rd grinds EVERYTIME kind of a killer, so i feel your pain with that grindin stuff

Same here, I have a gt (currently not running), sometimes grinds going into first, grinds into second when power shifting (fixed this by changing the way I shift), and sometimes into reverse. Im planning on doing a tranny swap when I get the car running.

Uh, if you think you're mechanically inclined enough to pull your tranny, take it apart, and replace the synchros on your own...go for it i guess. It'll be a decent amount of work, especially if you've never worked on one before.
If you have a mechanic do it, it'll cost you a decent chunk in labor.
Your other option is to just swap out for a new tranny. Depending on how much the mechanic charges you to replace the synchros, it might not be too much more just to replace the whole thing.

I have the same problem, usually i just double clutch into 4th and that works like a charm.

A good trick if shifting into reverse grinds is to shift into 1st gear first then put it into reverse. I couldn't tell you why it helps, but i know that me and a handful of other members here do that and it works great.
