Hi,

So I've finally decided to upgrade the speakers on my 2000 celica gt. I bought an Alpine MRA-D550 amp, and a pair of Alpine SPR-174A coaxial speakers for the rear. The front speakers present a dilemma however. I originally planned to get a pair of Alpine SPR-17S 2-way components, but after reading the forums, I realized that the stock front speakers are 3-way, with the midrange mounted on top of the woofer (I have 8 spkr premium). So I would be replacing a set of 3-ways with 2-ways. Not good. My question is this: Can I get away with buying a 3-way component speaker set like the JL Audio XR653-CSi (http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=11422), and mount the midrange on top of the woofer, just like the stock speakers are installed. I haven't taken apart the doors yet, just seen pictures on the forums. I don't want to deal with the hassle of making custom kick panels. What have others replaced their stock 3-way speakers with?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

They aren't 3way on a GT... unless you have the optional Premium Sound upgrade (not common). GT=6 spkrs, GT-S=8.

that won't work because it won't fit like stock. the stock speakers (not including the tweeter) are specially designed to mount on top of the other and the one on top is much smaller (in thickness) than a normal speaker. so unless you can find a similar speaker set that is design in similar fashion, you're probably gonna have to do a bit of fabrication

Look behind & below the glovebox for the amp.

I have a gts with 8 speaker premium. I replaced both of those 4" mid and 6.5"low with the alpine type r component. NO problem with that because the alpine covers mids and lows. And the 6.5" are not actually regular speakers they are small subs according to the shop that installed my headunit, they said they could not power the 6.5" subs with my setup so i just used the signal for the 4" mids to power the alpine type r's and they are much better than stock.

a quality aftermarket 2-way component system properly powered will still well out perform the stock 3-ways, i have the same set-up, dont get me wrong, they arent bad, but on a decent deck with an average pre-out they do distort quite easily, go with a good 2-way and thank me later

the spr-17s will cover all off the frequencies from highs all the way down to around 70-80 hz which is usually where your sub picks up the slack from anyway

Lucky you:)

Are you planning on driving your new components w/the stock amp or another MRA-D550?And the 6.5" are not actually regular speakers they are small subs according to the shop that installed my headunit,Correct. The OEMs are small subs.

The MRA-D550 is a 5 channel amp. Won't it be sufficient for both the fronts and rears?

I replaced my OEM 3-ways with Polk DB6501's, which are 2-ways.

I hooked up the woofer to the factory "sub" input, and the tweeter to the tweeter input. I did not hook up anything to the factory "mid" wires.

I am still using the stock amp, so I did not use the cross overs that came with the Polks.

Sound quality has improved vastly over stock (but they could still sound better, if I upgraded the factory amp).

Bass response is better with the Polks, which reproduce frequenices down to 30Hz.
