View Full Version : Bass Buildoff... Sound deadening question

Long story short, a group of my car enthusiast friends are all building big bass systems. I'm stuck b/w one very powerful 12" sub or a 15", either of which will be put in the spare tire well, fiberglass box constructed by myself (no flaming, I do this enough, so let me make my own choice on this one). My question is... Should I use some sort of product such as Dynamat to insulate my cabin, or my other choice. Just got an aftermarket parts installer job at my local Rhino Lining place as a 4 day a week gig through college. With enough time and taping, I could hit my trunk with about a 1/8 inch thick plate of urethane, though it would be a real chore taping off all clip locations, fuel pump, etc. Anyone think this would be a good idea? Just an idea, lol. I have the time and the means, but does anyone think it would make a difference in sound quality? We spray a lot of boxes, but a trunk would be new for me.

I would stick with Dynamat rather than urethane. I don't believe there's any hard proof urethane would do better.

On top of that, that much urethane will weigh your trunk down like hell.

You should hear the difference in quality that just spraying a box produces, though it isn't the same concept as the trunk itself. Just an idea. One big problem is that urethane is pretty permanent in this case. Dynamat is just so damn expensive, and i'm not too sure where to place it in the trunk to maximize its effectiveness.

Well, since you're using the wheel well, I'd recommend putting a minimum of two layers in the wheel well itself, if not more. Focus on the area where you're keeping the sub.

If Dynamat is way too expensive for you, check out Fatmat. 100 sq ft. for $100. There was another better rated deadening (better than Fatmat I mean), but I can't recall the name.

I appreciate the response. Yeah if size allows, I may hit the inside of the box at least with a few layers, and perhaps the outside. I plan on still utilizing the stock carpet, so it would match pretty well. Building a raised fake floor for the flush amp install. Nothing new, just classic, clean, and effective.

. Nice plan so far. If you can, deaden the entire trunk with a layer of the stuff and focus heavily on the strong spot (i.e. wheel well and a little around it).

I've heard it's a bitch... set aside a few days to do it. :)

Between school, work, and the girlfriend, time is my only really limiting factor. I will just keep the interior stripped out as long as the process takes. My focus is on clean sound and a clean look. Being a college student, I can't afford to build 3,000 dollar sound systems. Have a full memphis speaker setup, as well as a pioneer premier head unit. Just trying to get it all finished up. A decent 15 with a mono amp built to the specs i'm planning to utilize should make all of the bass I need, with some to spare. May just go with one badass 12, still up in the air, lol.

RAAMmat! That's what it was.

For the 15 vs. 12.... Well, do you want the intense bass of a 15 over the SQ of a good 12? You'd still get intense bass, sans a few decibels. There's some food for thought.

I get excellent SQ from 15's on properly built sealed enclosures. Sure, it will never do justice to the SQ of a powerful 12, but it would have to be one seriously hardcore 12, like a Fosgate Power Stage 2 or a Morel Ultimo.

Define your idea of a decent 15".

I agree that 15" are found in SQ cars. Its all about tuning. :)

you talking bout a T2? it slams very nicely in my hatch being only one 12 and sq is just as good as the spl it dishes out

Yeah, the T2. I have had dual T1 10's in my old car (95 Boneville, aka The Gangsta M1 Tank). I will probably drive to Mississippi and score myself a top of the line Treo Engineering 15. Worth the drive, and their sound quality is simply legendary. If not, perhaps a Morel Ultimo or Soundstream. They are all very impressive heavy hitters with the right time put into enclosures.

have you tried to get a hold of some FI subs? They the same as RE but much cheaper, they were designed by the same engineer.

Never heard of them. Link? I will definitely take a look if you can show me more.

Ya FI Qs are great as well. You listed some great SQ + SPL brands.

Meh, I'll just stick with a Kicker L7. I get it too cheap for me to look elsewhere.
