Well last friday i was driving on the highway and i was racing and shifted at fuel cut off and when i was in 4th gear i noticed it wouldn't move past 6,200rpm... I was giving it full trottle. So i upshifted to 6th gear and arrived at my exit. At the stop light my car starts blogging on me and my exhaust starts to backfire. I had the car towed back home and in the morning i checked all of my sensors to see if i popped any of them. Well the car was drivable but you would have to constantly give the car gas to stay alive. Also the rpm would no be constant. Eugnile and his friend did a compression check on my engine and it read. 230,240,0,250... I was hella scared! =\ we figured i had had a bent valve. I returned the stock intake back into the car and took the car to the dealership. Before i did that i reseted the ECU as well.
Toyota said the ecu read i had a broken Timing Valve and Timing Rod. And they wouldn't know if this was covered under warrenty. I currently have a 2000 GTS with 20599 Miles on the car. They said it would cost 1078 just to have the car looked at and to see if it was reved to high or if it was toyota's fault.... what should i do? Has anyone gotten this problem before? thx

shouldn't you be covered ? 20599 is not alot of miles, pressure pressure pressure, make them look at it

wasssup folks.. yea we did a compression check on yoshi8me's car.. and the following as he posted showed up.. with the 0 compression on 3rd cylinder..
check engine light was on.. the car felt sluggish.. if u put it in neutral it will die.. even on the freeway.. if u put it in neutral it will eventually die no matter what..
once or twice some white smoke would come out from the engine..
it would misfire.. not the exhaust.. but it sounded like it was coming from the engine bay.. this would only happen wen u gave more gas to it.. more u went to WOT the worse it would happen..
we thought it was the intake and the maf sensor.. bbut good thing we checked the compression..

Thats exactly what my car acted like after I misshifted it... isn't 230, 240, 250 a little high of compression (maybe I'm remembering it wrong!)

so how did u get the car covered under warrenty?

i checked my compression a while back and it read very simular(1st was 0, rest were normal).... the valves were bent, and the 1st one had a hole in it...
it's costing me $1600 to fix it, and even though it's still under warrenty, they wouldn't cover it.... said it had been over-revved, which they use for misshifted, but i'm going to go up there tommarrow and check out EVERYTHING myself...
good luck man

if toyota fixes all these stupid miss-shift cases, then shouldnt they have to fix your scenario? I'm sure a lawyer could fix this.

call toyota corporate and tell them u need 1078$ for the dealer to tear down ur motor. they will do it as long as toyota corp calls the dealer and authorizes the labor cost. i mis-shifted twice, and they wanted 1045 for a tear down, called toyota, and they checked it out. turns out the motor was fine and i just needed a new tensioner. tell toyota corp ur situation and they will open up ur car.

There's NO way that Toyota can blame you for over revving your vehicle since it DOES have a rev limiter on there. Tell them that. They have to cover it because it is an engine problem. You probably didn't mishift, but there are times in some engines when mechanical failure in the belts, valves, or anything else can cause damage, and it's not your fault. It is Toyota's responsibilty.. that's why they gave you a warranty, in case any part of the car is not mechanically sound.

Yoshi, play dumb man... and don't take any shiet from the Toyota... I played really dumb when i had to get my synchro and 2nd gear replaced while back in California.. I've played dumb everytime i went into the dealership for any works that needed to be done.... Key to your hassle free warranty work is play dumb and make it sound like it was the car not you!

That's what I'm wondering. I've never heard of either term either. Something sounds wrong with the dealer story in his original post. They are either trying to give him a hard time, get out of fixing something under warranty, or have no idea what's wrong.

Unfortunately yes, but you are not alone as you have been joined by the original poster and the service department he took it to. :)

I had my motor blow up recently. I broke # 3 and 4 connecting rods and mine was covered under the 60K powertrain warranty.

I have a question: If you're unable to go past 6,200 rpms in
4th, why would you go to 6th? Did you hit 6th, or did you go
into 2nd? You say you were racing and hit the rev limiter, so I guess it's after that when you couldn't go past 6,200 rpms. Did you have enough oil? The story doesn't sound right to me, and I guess Toyota questions it as well. I hope Toyota repairs it at no cost to you if it blew up without a misshift or lack of oil.

I was in 3rd gear and hit rev limiter So then i shifted to 4th gear and it was around 6,000 rpm and it was just stuck. So I shifted to 6th gear because i thought that it would be better for me to get it to a lower rpm. I changed oil the car 5 days before the problem happened. Mobil 1 Syntetic.

ok wtf is a timing rod??? theres a camshaft, a sprocket and a timing CHAIN... and there is no timing valve is there?? just the intake valves, and exhaust valves.. which are the ones usually affected my misshifts.

It is your car but I would have them explaining in depth as to what the ECU told them and why there may be a warranty issue. Particularly since noone seems to recognize the parts you say they told you about much less how the ECU would tell them they are broken.

please explain =D

Have them explain to you what is broken, how the ECU determined that there were physically broken parts and why it would be disallowed under warranty. Not that we are necessarily the brightest group around but noone has ever heard of the parts they told you were broken. If nothing else find a knowledable friend to go with and get more information. The whole thing does not sound right. IMHO

I agree. A lot of things with their explanation doesn't add up.
