Well I can't remember, but I read it on a review that was done on the matrix and the Vibe. They said it wouldnt be AWD but it would have the 2ZZ-GE engine. Just do a search on the web. Or look at www.isthistoyota.com they might say what models they'll offer. I'm to lazy to check it out myself. I have to play counter-strike for the next 10 hours straight.....I WANT TO BE AN ELITE AT CS!

The base model Matrix with the VVT-i will have AWD available but the if you have the VVTL-i you can't get AWD.

It's like what GTS808 said...Matrixes (Matrices?) with the GT engine (VVT-i) has the AWD available as an option with the 5 speed. The ones with the VVTL-i engine has the 6 speed but no AWD. You can look at the December of SCC for more info. XS Engineering already made a turbo for it (minor adjustments from the turbo for the Celi)

Matrix looks like a sweet little ride. Toyota sure likes to recycle their engines. Four use 1ZZ and two use 2ZZ.

regarding recycling engines.. how about Audi and VW using their 1.8T engine in everything.. Its a dope engine tho.

yea.. the Matrix XRS (this is the top of the line model which will have VVTL-i) will not come in awd.. however.. as others mentioned.. the lower models with 130 HP is available with AWD..
i have the decemeber issue of SCC right here.. and they did a full review of the matrix.. they even got a tuned one already with xs turbo in it already.. so its pretty cool.. however they got some pretty slow times with the stock matrix xrs vvtl-i 6 speed.. here are the times they got:
0-30 = 3.3 sec
0-60 = 8.9 sec
30-50 = 3.3 sec
50-70 = 5.1 sec
1/4 mile = 16.6 sec @ 85 mph
yea pretty dissapointing huh?
if someone already posted this.. sorry heh..
well if u cant wait to buy the magazine.. the full article is right here

maybe there's no AWD w/ the 2ZZ engine cuz the 6spd trans can't take the stress. Dropping the clutch on a 4rd car puts a huge strain on the drivetrain. Stupid people would probably do that.

I'm willing to bet that the tranny is pretty weak. Probably only meant for the vvt-i engine - If they used it on the vvtl-i engine, I doubt the tranny would last and there'd be lots of warranty issues. Maybe they'll make a stronger AWD tranny... next year :(

I dont think its a tranny problem... The GT and GTS autos have the same tranny with increased power...
EDIT: If i had to guess i'd say that its purely cost motivated.... making an extra trim level costs a lot of money and screws with the demographics of the rest of the trim models... imagine that as of now for the celica you have 4 options GTA GTM GTSA GTSM with the matrix youd have a further subdivision of AWD and noAWD which means that they'd have to make 8 trim levels ... and this is at a very high level in production.. these aint no folding mirror mods...
