Glaze is a silicone filler that will fill scratches for a short time. It usually makes it to your first wash before you see scratches again. Polish removes a layer of finish, clear coat usually, to reduce/remove scratches and renew finish lustre. Wax is a hydrophobic compound that provides a barrier from most UV radiation and wax. If i have a finished surface, it not only looks better, the bugs come off easier, the water wont sit on flat surfaces, and spotting is reduced. I recommend waxing at minimum once every three months, and claying bi annually. Polish as necessary to maintain maximum finish integrity. You should wax your vehicle as often as you can inorder to protect your clear coat. Body shop guys usually know what they are talking about, i cannot believe he would give you that line of disinformation.

They guy who owned the body shop that repainted my car also told me NO WAX! He said Glaze...

I don't get it. I thought you used Wax in conjunction with glaze.

You thought correctly. Glaze is a supplement to wax, however, it is a poor supplement. Glaze is a silicone filler that goes into uneven surfaces and acts as a filler for a short time. Usually after the first wash it is gone. Wax is a barrier that is worn down and then replaced. I cannot believe that body shop guys would say no wax. Maybe they want repeat business. I dont know. All the detailers ive talked to have said that wax is the single most important thing that will maintain a vehicle's finish. Actually most important is keeping the finish clean, but wax will make that easier as well.

What is Glaze?
Is it really bad to wash the car with dish soap?
What wax do you guys prefer?

Washing your car with dish soap isn't bad for the finish. Dish soap has a high alkalyn content that will eat right through wax, but it will not harm the paint. Washing your car with dish soap will remove any wax that is on the car so the paint will be directly exposed and unprotected.

There are two kind of polishes, which are polishing compounds and pure polish. A polishing compound contains fine abrasives that will remove a layer of clear coat to lessen or remove scratches, just like jayazevedo described. I don't think that the body shop was talking about using a polishing compound on your car, I think they were talking about using a pure polish. A pure polish contains no abrasives. It contains suplimental oils that nourish your paint and deepens the colour. I know that all my hot rod friends with $10,000 paint jobs just use a pure polish and glaze, NO WAX. I guess that since you are constantly nourishing your paint with the polish, you dont need to protect it with wax? I'm not 100% sure.

What I am 100% sure of, however, is that using the no wax method they are talking about takes a lot of dedication and commitment. You have to spend a lot of time on your car doing this two step process after you wash it(polish then glaze), and you have to do it ever week. I think that for the average person, using wax is by far the superior choice.

collegehunny, if you are interested in waxing your car, I would reccomend Meguires liquid Gold Class wax. It gives great results and is easy to apply. I personally use Zaino on my car, but zaino is kind of expensive and time consuming for just anyone to use, you kind of have to be a paint fanatic to get involved with it.

The 10K paint job hot rods you speak of are stored in bubbles, covered or at a bare minimum stored inside 99 percent of the time. Bird Crap, stuck on bugs, acid rain or rain period, and the other myriad things that the daily driver is exposed to are never a factor. They use a polish to shine instead of remove material, and a glaze to seal the finish i assume. Since these vehicles are given a fairly through detail every time they are washed, glaze is sufficient. For the daily driver i whole heartedly recommend waxing as often as you can. It will provide a barrier of protection against bird crap and all the other nasty things that your daily driving celica is exposed to. I dont know what their beef is with wax, but i also dont have a 10K paint job.
