So what your saying is. They out of the goodness of their hearts should.
A) Make the dealer trade (yes they need to send a equal or better car there)
B) Hope you will buy it when it comes in without any guarantee you will buy it.
They are a business and like it or not they are in business to make money.

I had to put a $500 deposit down for them to find the car i wanted and have it shipped from FL to NC. I never had to sign any paperwork though. Not until I actually gave them the rest of my downpayment and finalized the deal.

I guess you have to ask yourself how bad you want the car. WHy not just drive to LA to get it? Might be easier.
Of course, if you sign on the bottom line BEFORE the car arrives, then you should have already agreed on the price. Tell them OK, and put your number on a sheet of paper, make sure that is in the contract.

Um, they shouldn't need you to put your name down saying you Are buying the car. I put down a 1000 deposit for a new car and they couldnt' find me jack, so they ordered me a new one straight from japan, I backed out cuz I found a great deal on a used one. and went with that. Good dealers are good dealers.
just weigh your options, ifyou really really want the car. Just do it anyways

I had to order my Celica from Japan...it took just under 2 months to get here. Had to wait for the 2002's to be porduced then for the shipping. I put $500 down and would have been able to walk away when the car got there. We did agree on a price beforehand. I doubt any dealer will order a car and then start negotiating after the fact. I recommend staying away from "ordering" new cars...the dealership knows they have you by the balls. If it was just a car on their lot, they'll want to get rid of it. The longer it stays there, the more money they lose. An ordered car has no risk for the dealer. Even if you walk away once it arrives, they keep the deposit and can turn around and sell it to someone else.
