Damn, I was geting on I25 yesterday and I was in 5th. I tried to downshift to 4 but I grabed 2 instead. My car jumped and I looked at my tach and it was steady at 7900. I was like "oh $hit", so I popped the clutch and threw her back into 5. I could imagine what would have happened if I didnt have the limiter and it probably would not have been that good. Hopefuly that never happens again. Later all.

I'm sorry, but the rev limiter will not help you if you downshift at speed. The RPM at that point are soley controlled through the mechanical action of the drive train upon the engine. Put simply the RPM is driven by wheel speed and the gear selected.

After reading that subject line, I thought you were a Toyota spy loaded with pro-rev limiter propaganda, but as expected it was misguided information wrangled by oldster.

You got lucky and the speed and gear ratio just happened to match 7900 and not say 10,000

Yeah you are lucky... when I misshifted it was 4000 worth of warranty work and 2 weeks with no car! They are right though rev limiter only works on acceleration not when you downshift.

A better explanation. The rev limiter uses electronics to cut off fuel when it reaches a preset RPM. In the event of a misshift, fuel is not the problem. The drivetrain is what causes the engine to rev to let's say 10,000 RPMs.

I'd say the clutch was probably slipping like crazy and never got a chance to grab.

Anyone ever consider that he was at very low speed. Therefore shifting into 2nd only makes it rev up to 7900rpm.

Also we have a spark cut not fuel cut. :)

That's I-25 as in interstate 25 in Colorado. He didn't say how fast he was going in 5th when he downshifted. Since 2nd redlines around 58mph the 7900 RPM could have been right.:)

Foo! Read my hero Oldster's post. If he was going 125MPH, he would have no need downshift from 5th to 4th. LOL!

2nd is good for 60 mph so if you were just getting on the highway you probably were not above 60 yet.

Hi i'm Mr. toyota, and i'm here to tell you kids a story:

There once was a man, we will call him Chico, now chico had a shiny new 2002 GTS. But chico like to street race, and street racing is BAD. Then chico messed with his car's computer and raised the saftey limiter. Then chico's engine blew up and voided his WARRENTY. Then chico had no money and he was forced to drive a Geo metro for the rest of his life. The End.
