I never understood the point of people putting this sticker up in their cars. I mean its a sticker that new drivers have to put in their cars (most of them don't even want to). It basically is telling all other drivers that you suck at driving and you should be careful.

So why do I see like 50 of these stickers a day on people who are obviously older than 17? I understand the JDM fad and everything, but seriously, why advertise you're a crappy driver?

Discuss.

You said the key word..."JDM". If it's JDM, it must be great...therefore we must have it. Even JDM crap is better then US and DTM crap, didn't you know James?

Yea, I've seen JDM Scat porn too and you don't see people bringing that over here. Or how about kancho? Don't see little kids playing that game here.

I think I'll cry if I ever see a vending machine with used panties in it here in the states...

Oh really? You mean its not called 新車書マールク (Shinshasho maaruku(mark)) or 若葉マールク (wakaba mark)? Here, let me translate the kanji for you: First one: New Car Document Mark; Second one: Young Leaf Mark.

The stickers are given to people who just got their license and by law they're required to drive around with it for 1 years time. Its a warning for other people on the road to tell them that the person is a new drivers and to be careful around them, as they're inexperienced.

The other mark is called 福祉マールク (welfare mark) or 枯葉マールク (older leaf mark) given to people 70 years or older to signify you also need to be careful of them, as there is an aged person behind the wheel of the car.

Repost or not, people are still putting them in there, and I'm trying to understand why. It's pretty damn retarded to me.

Where did you get the info from the internet? Dont believe everything you read on the internet...because the madatory 1 year is not true. I have actually heard first hand as what they are used for and how to use them from someone who was born and raised in japan. They are not simply issued to "young drivers" and "old drivers". They have a choice as to whether they want them or not. It isnt just to warn people around you are old or inexperienced. In Japan people look up to elders and usually when they have that badge displayed, they are given the right away... They have multiple meanings and jobs.

People here see it as some sort of title. The meaning of the badge here has strayed from the orginal intent. People put them on their car if they are into the jdm theme. Here it doesnt mean your a beginner driver, but beginner to the jdm theme later they get the senior when they feel more knowledgable. But yes mainly a ricer would put them on the car just to say its jdm. Ricers like bright obnoxious colors so it is instinct to pick yellow and green :chuckles:

Posting your query in this forum is like asking devout Christians to consider the possiblity that Christ wasn't the son of god.

You already know the answer.

Its not law, but that is the general standard in Japan. I've heard this first had from native Japanese as well, not to mention from the older Japanese people who are a little more conscious of these things. Yes, wikipedia also has information, but wikipedia is often wrong. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you're wrong about the elder's sticker, but that's the difference between intent and effect.

But if you're saying that in the US its being used to signify rank of JDMness here in the US, then I guess that's an acceptable reason for it to exist in the US. Just even my Japanese friends at the last Celica meet were like "dude, wtf, is this guy trying to say he sucks at driving?"

It's pretty damn retarded.

Sad but true. I was actually looking for an explanation like what blitz posted up.

I have one in my windshield, I don't rock the magnet one though. I have it on there because it's part of the theme of my car. An accessory, if you will. Nothing more or less. If someone recognizes it and takes it as I suck at driving, well that's there concern, not mine. But that's why I have it on.

I might take it off though, the bright colors are interfering with my blacked out look.

haha that is funny

I see it as if you have a jdm themed car and have one, then it is ok. It just goes with the theme as Joe said. When you see these kids in hondas (yes it is mainly hondas) riding with them hanging in the back of their multicolored hatches and annoying fart can then it becomes just ghey.

My friend got a few of these when he was visiting his GFs family in japan and he sold them on a local forum. Boy did the fanboys eat that **** up! He literally has sold 2-3 a week for like 4 weeks straight and still counting. Each time I was like I bet you he drives a hatch. Each time they came to pick it up he causually asked "hey man what do you drive" guy replied back "I got a eg or ek" (Im thinking why cant you just say hatch instead of eg ek, trying to dress up the name.) Each time they replied I couldnt help but smile and give my friend the nod.

I guess I should keep my JDM Option sticker collection on the DL then.

I dunno, my cars don't have stickers on them as I don't like the attention being drawn when the only thing legal on my car is the frame itself....

This is correct., i have personally lived in japan for 6 years of my life. The sticker is in fact optional and its not just for young drivers.. its for NEW drivers , doesnt matter how old you are. You could be an american who is 50 but never drove on the right side of the road, you come to japan,,, hey guess what.. your a new driver to their standards and therefor should be sporting one of these. And yes blitz is right about the right of way stuff, people see them on the cars and realize they are either new to this way of driving or an elderly person whoes driving aint the greatest from old age and will usually yield them the right of way..
